Puccio and Holte Dominate in the Circle as Softball Shuts Out Eastern Shore Twice

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

Baltimore, MD -- The UMBC Softball Team (18-20, 2-3 America East) shutout in-state rival Maryland Eastern Shore (10-16, 4-4 MEAC) in both games of a double-header Wednesday afternoon

Junior Kim Puccio (Sparta, N.J/Sparta) and senior Jessica Holte (Ashland, Va./Atlee) were stellar in the circle, allowing a combined seven hits while striking out 15 and walking just four.

Offensively, the Retrievers were led at the plate by freshman Maddie Daigneau (New River, Ariz./Boulder Creek) in the first game as she drove in the lone run with an RBI single in the third. In game two, Daigneau added another RBI, while senior Kelly Lane (Albany, N.Y./Colonie Central) hit a two-run homer, and classmate Kaelin Jackson (Export, Pa./Franklin Regional) also plated a run.

Game 1:

The Retrievers and Hawks both received strong outings in the circle. Puccio went the distance, allowing no runs on four hits and two walks, while striking out nine batters.  This raised her record to 8-6 and was her second shutout in three games.

The lone run scored in the game was driven in by Daigneau off a sharply hit ball through the left side in the third inning. The hit drove in senior Jaclyn Buckley (Voorhees, N.J/Eastern Camden Regional) who started the inning off with a single and scored from second on the hit.

Game 2:

The Retrievers followed the same formula for the second game of the day, getting a strong shutout performance by Holte. The senior went the first 5.2 innings allowing no hits. She would allow just three singles all day, while striking out six and walking two. She raised her record to 5-7 with the win.

The Retrievers got out to a fast start, getting two runs in the second inning thanks to a two-run homer to left field from Lane.

They would score two more in the fourth inning, off a fielding error from the Hawks, and then a an RBI single up the middle from Jackson. Daigneau would drive in the fifth run of the game in the fifth inning off a fielder's choice.

The Retrievers will travel to Albany this weekend for a three game set against the Great Danes, with a double header on Saturday and the final game on Sunday.
