Retrievers Fight Back, Fall 7-3 to Towson on Wednesday in Extra Innings

Box Score

Baltimore, Md.—UMBC baseball got timely hitting late, but the Towson Tigers defeated the Retrievers, 7-3 in 11 innings on Wednesday. Dalton Stewart (Sharpsburg, Md./Boonsboro) was the lone Retriever to have multiple hits on the afternoon.

The Retrievers fall to 1-7, while the Tigers improve to 7-2.

Towson scored runs in each of the first three innings to take an early 3-0 lead. However the Retriever bats would wake up in the latter innings, as UMBC made their comeback push.

UMBC got going in the seventh as Zack DeThomasis (Rennsalaer, N.Y./Hudson Valley CC) reached on a fielding error by Tiger short stop Richie Palacios. Stewart came up and ripped a double to left field, putting runners on second and third with one out. Freshman Christian Torres (Miami, Fla./Miami Senior) laced a single to left, plating Stewart and DeThomasis to cut the Towson lead to 3-2.

The very next inning, Collin Stack (Jamestown, N.Y./Monroe CC) reached on a fielders' choice, setting up Andrew Casali (New Canaan, Conn./New Canaan). Casali grounded out to second, allowing Stack to cross home, tying the contest at 3-3.

Senior Corry Callahan (Sykesville, Md./Good Counsel) helped keep the game tied through the latter stages of the game, striking out five Tigers through three innings.

However the Tigers would strike again in the 11th, getting four runs off a three-run home run by Trey Martinez and an RBI triple from Palacios to make it 7-3 Towson.

The Tigers would silence the Retrievers in the bottom of the inning, taking a 7-3 win on Wednesday.

Stewart went 2-5 with two doubles, while Christian (two) and Casali (one) each drove in runs to lead the offense.

UMBC returns to action this weekend with a three game set against UNC Asheville. The series with the Bulldogs will begin on Friday with a 1 p.m. first pitch.
