UMBC Baseball Falls to Delaware, 17-6, on Tuesday

Newark, Del.—UMBC baseball dropped a 17-6 decision to Delaware on Tuesday afternoon in Newark. The Retrievers collected 12 hits, but gave up 19 in the loss. Sophomore AJ Wright (Cherry Hill, N.J./Cherry Hill West) collected three hits to lead UMBC.

The Retrievers fall to 1-6, while Delaware improves to 5-6 on the year.

The Blue Hens get on the board early with a pair of runs in the bottom of the first with one out to take the early 2-0 lead.

In the top of the next inning, Jamie Switalski (Gibsonia, Pa./Pine-Richland) led off the inning with a single. Just two batters later, Chris Convers (Poolesville, Md./Poolesville) blasted a two-run home run to left to tie the game at 2-2. The home run was the first in Convers' career.

Delaware retook the lead in the third, getting a solo home run from Brian Mayer on the second pitch of the inning. They would not end there, as they increased their lead to 6-2 after putting up four runs in the inning.

The Blue Hens would add to their lead, scoring three in the fourth and one in the fifth to make it 10-2.

The Retrievers would threaten in the seventh, getting Andrew Casali (New Canaan, Conn./New Canaan) to third, but Delaware would get out of the inning unscathed.

Trailing 15-2, Christian Torres (Miami, Fla./Miami Senior) led off the eighth with a walk, followed by a Zack Bright (Fairfax Station, Va./WT Woodson) single to put runners on first and second. Kyle Benjamin (Mechanicsville, Md./Bishop McNamara) doubled home home Torres, followed by a Raven Beeman (Somerset, Pa./Somerset) single to make it 15-5.  AJ Wright hit a sac fly to score Beeman to cut the deficit to 15-6.

Delaware would tack on a pair of runs in the eighth to seal a 17-6 victory on Tuesday afternoon.

Wright led the Retriever offense with three hits, adding an RBI. Switalski had two hits, scoring once. Convers drove in a pair of runs with his first career homer in the second inning.

UMBC returns to action tomorrow, Wednesday March 8 with a 3 p.m. matchup with local-rival Towson at Alumni Field.
