Baltimore, Md.—UMBC baseball put up nine runs in the first two innings to win the series with Albany, 9-3 on Sunday. Senior starter Joe Vanderplas (Fairfax, Va./Tennessee) picked up his second win of the year, going five strong innings in the win.

UMBC improves to 4-11, 2-1 AE while Albany falls to 8-8, 1-2 AE.

Andrew Casali (New Canaan, Conn./New Canaan) led off the first with a walk, and would be brought home on a Hunter Dolshun (Warwick, N.Y./Warwick Valley) sacrifice fly, part of a five run first inning. Christian Torres (Miami, Fla./Miami Senior) followed up with a sac fly of his own to bring in Mitchell Carroll (Oakton, Va./Oakton) who got on board with a single.

Collin Stack (Jamestown, N.Y./Monroe CC) singled home Jamie Switalski (Gibsonia, Pa./Pine-Richland) to make it 3-0, before Raven Beeman (Somerset, Pa./Somerset) capped the inning with a big two-RBI double to make it 5-0 UMBC after one.

Casali would lead off the very next inning with a single, later scoring on a Switalski single through the left side.  After a Stack single scored Dolshun, Beeman once again brought in two runs, this time with a single to left, giving UMBC a big 9-0 lead.

The Great Danes would put up a pair of runs in the fifth, and one in the eighth, but the Retriever pitching staff shut down Albany all game long. Vanderplas picked up the win, going five innings, giving up seven hits with four strikeouts. Classmates Kevin Little (Weldon, Calif./Taft CC) and Cory Callahan (Sykesville, Md./Good Counsel) each went two innings in relief, giving up just three hits.

Beeman led the Retrievers going 3-4 from the dish with four RBI, while Stack and Switalski each had three hits.

UMBC is back in action on Tuesday, March 28 when they host George Mason at 6 p.m. at Alumni Field.
