Baltimore, Md. – Senior Jessica Holte (Ashland, Va/Atlee) threw a complete game shutout in game one, while classmate Kelly Lane (Albany, N.Y./Colonie Central) went 3-for-6 with two home runs and three RBI on the day as the UMBC Softball team swept their doubleheader against Robert Morris (5-18) and Siena (2-15), 4-0 and 4-3, respectively Saturday afternoon in Baltimore.

The wins pushed the Retrievers win streak to a season-best seven games.

Holte threw her third shutout of the season in game one against Robert Morris, moving her into a tie for second on the UMBC all-time list of shutouts thrown in a career. UMBC (13-15) would need a bit more than pitching in the second game against Siena, as the Retrievers walked it off on a Jaclyn Buckley (Voorhees, N.J./Eastern Camden Regional) single in the bottom of the ninth.

Game 1

UMBC broke the ice as they got on the board in the second inning thanks to a leadoff homer from Lane. The Retrievers would keep the runs coming after Carly Lesko (New Milford, N.J./New Milford) reached base on a fielding error by the right fielder, and Toni Santonastasso (Canonsburg, Pa/Pope John XXIII Regional) doubled Lesko in. Santonastasso was then doubled in by Buckley to put UMBC up 3-0.

The Retrievers would get some insurance in the fifth inning when Kaelin Jackson (Export, Pa/Franklin Regional) hit sacrifice fly to extend the lead to 4-0, which would be the final.

Holte (4-5) guided the victory in the circle, as she went the distance only giving up four hits, and never allowed a runner to get past second base.

Game 2

Siena was able to get on the board in the top of the first thanks to an unearned run on a sacrifice fly. UMBC finally responded in the fourth inning, as a Jackson single scored Tori Alexander (Woodbridge, Va/Woodbridge Senior), who doubled right before. Lane would hit her second homer of the day, a no-doubter to left field, to put the Retrievers up 3-1. The Saints would respond back with two runs of their own the next half inning to tie it up at three, which is where it would stay until the ninth inning.

Due to international tiebreaker rule, Lesko was placed on second base to start the ninth inning. After a Santonastasso sacrifice bunt, Buckley would line a single into left center to score the winning run, and lift UMBC to the 4-3 victory.

Nicole Casagrand (3-3) would earn the victory, her third of the season, as she threw 4.2 innings of one-hit ball without giving up a run.

The Retrievers will be back in action at UMBC on Sunday afternoon, as they play Siena at noon, followed by Robert Morris at 2:00 pm.
