Retriever Baseball Drops 4-3 Decision to George Washington on Tuesday

Baltimore, Md.— UMBC baseball had to come from behind to tie, but a home run in the ninth gave George Washington a 4-3 win on Tuesday night. The Retrievers got a pair of hits from Andrew Casali (New Canaan, Conn./New Canaan) in the loss.

The Retrievers fall to 2-10 while George Washington improves to 9-11 on the year.

George Washington gets on the board first with a solo home run from Brandon Chapman in the top of the second.

The Retrievers would answer in the bottom of the inning. Dalton Stewart (Sharpsburg, Md./Boonsboro) led off the inning with a single to left, followed by an AJ Wright (Cherry Hill, N.J./Cherry Hill West) walk to put runners on first and second. The runners would move up on a wild pitch, as the very next pitch hit Christian Torres (Miami, Fla./Miami Senior).

UMBC would crack the scoreboard on a Zack DeThomasis (Rennsalaer, N.Y./Hudson Valley CC) fielders' choice, allowing Stewart to score on a fielding error. Mitchell Carroll (Oakton, Va./Oakton) followed suit with a sac fly, letting Wright cross the plate to give the Retrievers a 2-1 lead.

The Colonials would score a run in the third and fourth to retake the lead, 3-2, holding the Retriever bats silent during those two innings.

Andrew Casali led off the fifth with a single, moving to second on a walk from Collin Stack (Jamestown, N.Y./Monroe CC). Casali would move up on a balk and later score on fielders' choice from Hunter Dolshun (Warwick, N.Y./Warwick Valley) to tie things up at 3-3.

Both sides would remain silent until the ninth when a solo home run by Bobby Campbell pushed GW in front 4-3. The Colonials shut down the Retrievers in the bottom half of the inning to take the win on Tuesday

Casali led the Retrievers with two hits, scoring once. Stewart and Torres each had a hit on the night with Stewart scoring once.

UMBC will return to action on Saturday and Sunday, March 25-26 with an America East series against Albany at Alumni Field. The Retrievers and Great Danes will play a double header on Saturday starting at noon with a single game on Sunday also at noon.
