Nolan Nets Career-High Five Goals, Men's Lacrosse Wins #AEMLAX Opener, 12-9, at Stony Brook

Box Score

Stony Brook, N.Y. – UMBC sophomore midfielder Billy Nolan (Crofton, Md./Arundel) scored a career high five goals as the visiting Retrievers upended Stony Brook, 12-9, in the America East opener for both squads.

The Retrievers (3-4, 1-0 AE) have won two straight and three of the last four contests, while Stony Brook has dropped two straight to fall to 4-2, 0-1.

UMBC never trailed, but saw a 6-4 halftime edge evaporate as Stony Brook's Alex Corpolongo tied the score at 7-7 just one minute into the fourth quarter.

SBU won the ensuing draw, but UMBC freshman face-off specialist Jake Brothers (Elkridge, Md./Mount St. Joseph) stayed with the play and caused a turnover. The Retrievers gained possession and Nolan scored an unassisted goal to give the visitors the lead for good at 8-7 with 13:02 remaining.

The Seawolves committed a dead ball slashing penalty after the goal and, after a Brothers face-off win, UMBC junior midfielder Max Haldeman (York, Pa.) converted a man-up goal just 34 seconds after Nolan's go-ahead marker. Brothers captured the ensuing draw and Nolan posted his fourth of the game with 11:49 remaining as UMBC scored three times in a span of 73 seconds.

UMBC extended the run to 5-0 as Nolan posted his fifth and sophomore attackman Jack Andrews (Arnold, Md./St. Mary's) tallied his second as the Retrievers built a game-high five-goal lead at 12-7 with 6:58 remaining.

Stony Brook would get one back, but UMBC maintained possession for the bulk of the final six minutes and Retriever senior netminder Ruston Souder (Pasadena, Md./Chesapeake) made a key save with 2:39 to play to keep the hosts at bay and provide the Retrievers with their first America East victory in a league opener since 2014.

Entering the game, Nolan had only one goal on the season and his career high was a pair of goals at Ohio State in 2016.

UMBC senior attackman Max Maxwell (Hamburg, N.Y.) scored a pair of goals and added two assists, while Andrews and freshman linemate Ryan Frawley (Mountain Lakes, N.J.) added two goals apiece. Brothers won 14-of-25 draws and recorded a team-best six ground balls.

Corpolongo tied Nolan for game honors with five goals.

UMBC jumped out to a 4-0 lead after 15 minutes, as Nolan and Maxwell scored within a 12-second span to highlight the Retrievers' great start. But Stony Brook answered with four consecutive goals to open the second quarter, until Frawley scored off a feed from Nolan with 4:34 remaining and Andrews tallied an unassisted goal at the 2:09 mark to give the visitors a two-goal-bulge at intermission.

The Retrievers outshot the Seawolves, 34-33, and cleared successfully on all nine chances. Souder made 10 saves, including six in the second half, while SBU's Brandon Maciejewski posted six for his side.

UMBC allowed single-digit goals for the fourth consecutive game.

UMBC now leads the series, 14-9, and the Retrievers have won seven of 11 meetings on Long Island.

UMBC takes its final break from America East play and completes a three-game road swing next Saturday, March 25 when they make their first ever visit to Ann Arbor, Mich., to take on the Michigan Wolverines. The opening face-off is slated for 1:00 p.m.
