Retrievers Split Saturday Double Header Against UNC Asheville

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

Asheville, N.C.— UMBC baseball split the final two games against UNC Asheville on Saturday, winning the second of the twin bill to improve to 2-9 on the year.

Game One:

The Retrievers once again found themselves behind early on in the game, as the Bulldogs raced out to a 4-0 lead after two innings.

UMBC got on the board with a run in the top of the fourth. Dalton Stewart (Sharpsburg, Md./Boonsboro) got on with a one-out single and would steal second just a couple pitches later. Freshman Christian Torres (Miami, Fla./Miami Senior) brought Stewart home with a double to right, cutting the deficit to 4-1.

After UNC Asheville responded with a pair of runs to make it 6-1, the Retrievers went on to score five straight over the next two innings. Raven Beeman (Somerset, Pa./Somerset) led off the fifth with a single and would advance to second on a stolen base. Collin Stack (Jamestown, N.Y./Monroe CC) would drive him in with a single up the middle to make it 6-2.

A passed ball moved Stack up to third, followed by a Jamie Switalski (Gibsonia, Pa./Pine-Richland) walk set up Stewart. The freshman doubled to right center, plating Stack and Switalski to cut the Bulldog lead to 6-4.

The very next inning, Owen Schneider (Stafford, Va./Colonial Forge) would cross home after he singled and scored on a Zack Bright (Fairfax Station, Va./WT Woodson) double. Stack once again struck with an RBI single up the middle to plate Bright, tying the game.

However the Bulldogs struck the final blow, getting the walk-off win on an RBI single in the ninth.

Stack led the offense with three hits, driving in two runs. Mitchell Carroll (Oakton, Va./Oakton) also collected three hits, while Stewart drove in two runs.

Game Two:

The Retrievers came out in game two swinging, getting a run in the top of the first on a Switalski RBI double, scoring Stack.

After a Bulldog run in the bottom of the inning, UMBC scored a pair of runs in both the third and fourth innings. Switalski struck again, blasting a big two-run home run to increase the lead to 3-1 in the third. In the fourth, AJ Wright (Cherry Hill, N.J./Cherry Hill West) reached on a fielding error, and moved up on a Stack single. Just pitched later, Dalton Stewart singled home both runners to make it 5-1 UMBC.

UNC Asheville would cut the lead to 5-4 after the eighth, but UMBC put up three in the ninth to take the 8-4 victory.

Starter Joe Vanderplas (Fairfax, Va./Tennessee) picked up the win going 5.1 innings giving up just two runs with three strikeouts. Cory Callahan (Sykesville, Md./Good Counsel) earned the save, not giving up a hit in 1.2 innings of work.

Switalski had four hits with four RBI in the win.
