Richmond, Va.  – UMBC cut a late six-goal deficit in half, but could not complete the comeback and fell at 16th-ranked Richmond, 10-5, at Robins Stadium.  

Trailing 7-1 in the late stages of the third quarter, senior Max Maxwell (Hamburg, N.Y.) finished a Billy Nolan (Crofton, Md./Arundel) feed with 3:26 remaining in the stanza to cut the deficit to 7-2 after 45 minutes.

UMBC freshman face-off specialist Jake Brothers (Elkridge, Md./Mount St. Joseph) won the opening draw of the fourth quarter, and junior LSDM Billy O'Hara (Davidsonville, Md./South River) corralled the ground ball and scored an unassisted goal just 15 seconds into the frame. The Retrievers closed to within 7-4 when Nolan tallied an unassisted goal with 13:29 remaining.

Brothers won the ensuing draw, but UMBC committed a turnover and UR's Dan Ginestro capitalized, halting the visitors' momentum with a goal 18 seconds after Nolan's score.

Just six seconds later, undeterred, Brothers, the reigning America East Rookie of the Week, won another face-off and scored his first collegiate goal to bring UMBC to within 8-5.

UMBC would control possession and attempt six shots in an effort to trim the gap to a pair of goals, but Spider senior netminder Benny Pugh made all four of his fourth quarter saves in that span to deny the Retrievers.

With UMBC emptying its net in the final two minutes, UR scored two late goals to finalize the scoring at 10-5.

Nolan was the lone multiple point scorer for UMBC (0-3) with a goal and a helper. Ryan Lee led Richmond (2-0) with the game's lone hat trick.

Pugh made 10 saves for UR, while UMBC senior netmdiner Ruston Souder (Pasadena, Md./Chesapeake) collected all seven of his stops in the first 45 minutes of play.

The Retrievers attempted a game-high 12 first quarter shots, out-attempting UR, 12-5, but only put one on cage and fell behind, 2-0, after 15 minutes. The Spiders increased the lead to 4-0 before freshman Mitch Howell (Laurel, Md./DeMatha) netted a feed from sophomore Jack Andrews (Arnold, Md./St. Mary's) with 6:57 to play in the second quarter to get UMBC on the board.

But Lee and Adrian Nash scored to close the half at 6-1, and Lee completed his hat trick 4:51 into the second half to extend the lead to 7-1.

UMBC outshot UR, 32-24, and face-offs were even at 9-all. Brothers attempted all 18 draws in the game and won five-of-seven in the final 15 minutes.

O'Hara produced an outstanding game with a goal, four ground balls and three caused turnovers.

UMBC could not take advantage of four man-up opportunities, failing on all four chances.

The Retrievers open the 2017 home schedule versus Mercer on Saturday, Feb. 25 with a noon face-off time on tap.
