A day later, Darley made school history, knocking down ten 3-point field goals and scoring a career-high 38 points as the Retrievers (17-10, 8-6 America East) snapped a season-long three-game slide with a 108-102 victory over UMass Lowell (11-19, 5-10).

The 38-point effort is the third-most scored by a Retriever in 49 seasons of basketball at UMBC. He eased by teammate Jairus Lyles, who scored 37 at Maine last February.  The 38 points is the most scored by an America East player this season.

Darley played only 28 minutes, 12 in the first half and 16 in the second.  He set the tone by knocking down his first trey 14 seconds into the game. After a miss, he swished his next three first-half attempts, giving him four in the first 4:30 before his second and last miss of the game at the 14:36 mark. He made his fifth of the half at the 7:54 mark.

Darley knocked down all five attempts from long range in the final 20 minutes. In total, he was 10-of-12 from behind the arc and 13-of-16 from the floor overall.

The senior's performance overshadowed a brilliant effort by UML sophomore guard Ryan Jones, who led his squad with 32 points and added seven assists.

The two top offensive squads in America East both easily surpassed the 50 percent mark from the floor. UMBC converted 34-of-59 shots from the floor (57.6 percent), while UML knocked down 32-of-57 (56.1 percent).  Led by Darley, UMBC knocked down 16-of-26 from behind the arc (a season-high 61.5 percent).

Darley propelled UMBC to a very early 19-6 lead just 4:30 into the contest. But the River Hawks countered with a 16-4 surge to cut the gap to 23-22 at the midpoint of the half.

The runs continued in the stanza as UMBC went up 35-24 at the 6:40 mark after a 10-2 surge, but UML found the range from deep and closed to within 43-42 on a Jones trey with 91 seconds remaining. But guards Jourdan Grant (Bowie, Md./Archbishop Spalding) and Rodney Elliott (Baltimore, Md./John Carroll) converted treys on UMBC's final two possessions and the hosts went to the break leading, 49-42.

 The River Hawks, who never led in the game, got to within 62-60 after freshman wing Rinardo Perry hit one of two free throws at the 14:53 mark. But Elliott and Lyles hit treys on the next two possessions and a three-point play by Retriever freshman forward Max Curran (Hooksett, N.H.) capped a 11-4 response that put the hosts ahead, 73-64 with 12:29 remaining.

Perry knocked down a trey, but Retriever freshman Arkel Lamar (Bridgeport, Conn.) matched him  and the UMBC lead fluctuated between seven and 12 points until a Jahad Thomas layup cut the UML deficit to 106-100 with just 21 seconds remaining.

Thomas scored 23 of his 26 points in the second half as UML converted 18-of-28 shots (64.3 percent) from the floor and 20-of-24 from the charity stripe in the final 20 minutes.

Elliott and junior guard Jairus Lyles (Silver Spring, Md./DeMatha) each scored 14 points for UMBC, while Lamar contributed 11. Junior guard K.J. Maura (San Juan, P.R.) topped all players with 10 assists.

UMBC completes the home portion of the regular season by welcoming Stony Brook on Wed., Feb. 22. The Retrievers will honor Darley and classmate Ben Grace before the 7:00 p.m. tip-off versus the Seawolves. Fans are encouraged to be in their seats at 6:45 p.m. for the pre-game ceremony.

Notes: Darley became the 12th NCAA Division I player to convert 10 or more treys in a game this season…   He moved into seventh place on UMBC's all-time treys list with 140… UMBC's 17 wins ties the 1988-89 team for the fifth-most in the school's 30-year NCAA DI history.
