Men's Lacrosse Falls at Eighth-Ranked Hopkins, 15-5

Box Score

BALTIMORE – Eighth-ranked Johns Hopkins (2-0) outscored UMBC, 7-0, in the second quarter and went on to a 15-5 victory over the Retrievers (0-2) at Homewood Field.

Senior attackman Max Maxwell (Hamburg, N.Y.) was UMBC's lone multiple-point scorer with a goal and an assist. Freshman face-off specialist Jake Brothers (Elkridge, Md./Mt. St. Joseph) won 9-of-15 face-offs for the visitors.

The Retrievers got off to a good start, answering both Hopkins' goals in the first quarter. Sophomore attackman Jack Andrews (Arnold, Md./St. Mary's) knotted the score at 1-1 at the 2:13 mark with a rocket from nine yards out in the center of the field. After Hopkins scored a man-up goal at the 10:00-minute mark, senior attackman Max Maxwell (Hamburg, N.Y.) made a brilliant play, stripping the ball at midfleld on a Blue Jay attempted clear, picking up the loose ball and feeding freshman Ryan Frawley (Mountain Lakes, N.J.) for the tying goal at the 13:17 mark.

But Hopkins bombarded the Retrievers in the second quarter, outshooting the visitors, 17-3, and tallying all seven second-period goals to take a 9-2 lead at intermission.

UMBC snapped a long scoring drought as Maxwell scored on assist by sophomore midfielder Gunnar Schimoler (Edgewater, Md./South River) at the 5:52 mark, but Hopkins outscored the Retrievers, 3-1, in the third period to lead, 12-3 after 45 minutes.

Juniors Max Haldeman (York, Pa.) and Jonah Kozireski (Severna Park, Md./Severna Park) scored fourth quarter goals for UMBC.

Senior goalkeeper Ruston Souder (Pasadena, Md./Chesapeake) faced 42 Hopkins shots and made nine saves in the contest.

The Retrievers won the face-off battle, 13-11.

Hopkins senior attackman Wilkins DIsmuke led a balanced attack with three goals, while junior attackman Shack Stanwick recorded two goals and three helpers.

UMBC will face Richmond in Richmond, Va., next Saturday, Feb. 18 at 1:00 p.m.
