BALTIMORE – UMBC sophomore forward Max Curran (Hooksett, N.H.) set career marks with 21 points and 10 rebounds, leading the host Retrievers (1-2) to a 93-62 victory over Central Penn College (3-1) in the home opener at the RAC Arena.

Curran scored 17 points of his points in the second half, including 13 in the first 5:58. He knocked down all of his career-best four treys in the second half and added two thunderous dunks.

Curran led five Retrievers in double figures, as fellow sophomore forward Arkel Lamar (Bridgeport, Conn.) led that group with 14 points.

Central Penn was led by guard Daylin Davis, who notched 14 points.

The Retrievers scored 18 consecutive points in the early stages of the game to extend a 3-2 lead to 21-2 after a layup by Jairus Lyles (Silver Spring, Md./DeMatha) at the 11:06 mark of the first half. The Knights would get to within 32-18 with 5:30 remaining in the half, but UMBC went into the break with a 48-28 advantage.

Central would score the first point of the second half, but the Retrievers put the game out of reach by outscoring the visitors, 17-5, in the first 5:10 of the stanza. Curran tallied UMBC's 11 points of that run, capped by a pair of treys.

The Retrievers shot over 50 percent from the floor and finished at 52.8 percent (28-of-53) for the game. They knocked down 11 treys and now have 33 in three contests. UMBC outrebounded CPC, 46-27, and held the Knights to 36.8 shooting from the floor.

Junior guard Ishmail Jabbie (Greenbelt, Md./Eleanor Roosevelt) missed his career high by one point, finishing with 11 points in 12 minutes. Junior forward Max Portmann (Wichita Falls, Texas) knocked down 9-of-10 free throw attempts and also scored 11 points, while junior forward Joe Sherburne (Whitefish Bay, Wisc.) added 10 points.

Senior guard Jourdan Grant (Bowie, Md./Archbishop Spalding) tied his career high with nine assists.

UMBC heads back to the road when they travel to Hamilton, N.Y. to take on Colgate on Sunday at 2:00 p.m.
