Retrievers Complete Sweep in 7-6 Extra Inning Win on Sunday at UMass Lowell

Box Score

Lowell, Mass.—UMBC baseball got big contributions from freshman AJ Wright (Cherry Hill, N.J./Cherry Hill West) and junior Andrew Casali (New Canaan, Conn./New Canaan) in a 7-6 ten inning win on Sunday. Wright went 4-5 with three extra base hits and four RBIs, as Casali had three hits and picked up his third save of the year, and second this weekend as UMBC moves to 23-20, 11-9 AE.

UMBC jumped on the River Hawks (17-26, 5-16 AE) with a five spot in the top of the first inning. The Retrievers loaded the bases after a pair of walks and a single, setting up Jamie Switalski (Gibsonia, Pa./Pine-Richland). Switalski singled home Nick Naumann (Essex, Md./John Carroll/Chestnut Hill) before Casali singled home Anthony Gatto (Hauppauge, N.Y./Smithtown West). Wright followed up with a big three run triple to right center, unloading the bases and giving the Retrievers a 5-0 lead.

Wright would strike again, this time doubling home Switalski for his fourth RBI of the day.

The River Hawk bats would wake up in the fourth, as UMass Lowell put up four runs in the inning to cut the deficit to 6-4. They added another run in the seventh, and tied the game in the ninth forcing extra innings.

The extra frame saw Wright collect his fourth hit of the day, this time a single to lead off the inning. He would advance to second after a Mitchell Carroll (Oakton, Va./Oakton) bunt single. After a Kevin Lachance (Clifton, Va./Centreville) walk, Naumann flew out to right, allowing Wright to score to give UMBC a 7-6 lead.

Casali would come on in the tenth, got pair of pop outs to shut the door on the River Hawks, picking up his second save of the weekend.

Wright went 4-5 with four RBIs, two doubles and a triple in the win. Casali had three hits and an RBI to help the Retriever offense.

UMBC starts a seven game home stand to end the season on Tuesday, May 10 against Georgetown. The Retrievers and Hoyas will battle beginning at 6 p.m. from Alumni Field.
