UMBC Baseball Drops Second in a Row, 12-8 to George Washington on Tuesday

Box Score

Baltimore, Md.—UMBC baseball dropped their second straight, 12-8 to George Washington on Tuesday. The Retrievers got a 3-5 day from Hunter Dolshun (Warwick, N.Y./Warwick Valley), as the team dropped their second straight, and fell to 13-12 on the year.

George Washington opened the game with a pair of runs in the first after an RBI triple and sac fly.

The Retrievers would respond with a four spot in the third to take the lead. Anthony Gatto (Hauppauge, N.Y./Smithtown West) singled up the middle to drive in Kevin Lachance (Clifton, Va./Centrevill), followed by a Hunter Dolshun single to tie the game at 2-2. Andrew Casali (New Canaan, Conn./New Canaan) singled to right just two pitches later to plate Jamie Switalski (Gibsonia, Pa./Pine-Richland) to give the Retrievers the lead. Nick Naumann (Essex, Md./John Carroll/Chestnut Hill) capped the inning with a sac fly to give UMBC a 4-2 lead after three.

The Colonials would answer with a sac fly of their own, followed up by a single by Gabe Scott to tie the game at 4-4 in the fourth. They would continue to threaten, but the inning would end after a nice jumping snag from AJ Wright (Cherry Hill, N.J./Cherry Hill West) to quell the rally.

After Casali drew a four pitch walk to load the bases, Wright unloaded the bases on a three-run double to deep left center, giving the Retrievers a 7-4 lead.

However the Colonials scored five runs in the top of the eighth, giving them a 10-7 lead that they would not relinquish. Gatto would hit a home run to lead off the ninth, but it was not enough as the Colonials held on for a 12-8 win on Tuesday.

Dolshun went 3-5 with an RBI to lead the Retriever offense. Gatto and Wright each added two hits for the Retrievers in the loss.

The Retrievers will return to action on Saturday and Sunday with an America East series at Albany. The Great Danes and Retrievers will play two on Saturday at noon, before finishing the series at noon on Sunday.
