Lewnes Ties School Record With Ten Goals, But UMBC Rally Halted in 15-14 OT Loss to No. 5 Albany

Box Score

BALTIMORE – UMBC senior attackman Nate Lewnes (Arnold, Md./St. Mary's) tied a school record by scoring 10 goals and spearheaded a furious Retriever rally, but fifth-ranked Albany scored late in the first overtime period to survive and triumph, 15-14.

Lewnes, who scored the most goals by an NCAA Division I player this season, tied Jason Smith's mark of 10, set versus Colgate in 1992.

UMBC (4-10, 1-5 America East) trailed, 11-3, early in the third quarter, but Lewnes scored three of four times in a 4-0 run and the Retrievers had trimmed the deficit to 13-8 after 45 minutes.

After Albany's Connor Fields extended the margin to 14-8 just 1:10 into the fourth quarter, Lewnes sandwiched a pair of scores around junior Max Maxwell's tally in a span of 2:41 and the Retrievers had sliced the margin in half.

Despite the fact that the Danes won six-of-eight fourth quarter draws, UMBC and Lewnes continued the rally, as the southpaw attackman found the net with 6:02 and 4:58 remaining to cut the margin to 14-13 and send the crowd and Retriever bench into a frenzy.

UMBC drew a penalty with 1:58, but seemed to squander the chance off a turnover.  After a Retriever time-out, senior midfielder Steve Winsor (Chapel Hill, N.C). intercepted a pass at the midfield stripe. He fed Maxwell, who spotted a wide open Lewnes six yards from the goal, and he made no mistake in burying his eighth goal of the half and squaring the game at 14-all with 1:10 remaining.

The Retrievers would take a penalty with 36 seconds to play in the fourth, and the visitors were able to get possession of the ball as the horn sounded, thus keeping it at the outset of overtime. The Danes never gave up possession, and eventually, UA sophomore midfielder Kyle McClancy isolated on a short-stick middie and scored with 15 seconds remaining to seal the victory.

Maxwell contributed a goal and four helpers to the cause, while sophomore midfielder Max Haldeman (York, Pa.) scored twice and added three assists.

Albany junior attackman Seth Oakes led his side with six goals, while Fields added three goals and three assists.  UA freshman face-off specialist  Zach Ornstein controlled an amazing 25 of 29 draws and corralled 22 ground balls.

Despite missing three games, Lewnes finished the season with 43 goals, the fourth-most in a single season in school history. He tallied 119 career goals, passing Brendan Mundorf (2003-2006), Drew Westervelt (2004-2007) and Chris Turner (1996-99) and into fifth place in school history.

Albany outshot UMBC, 41-37, and Retriever junior netminder Ruston Souder (Pasadena, Md./Chesapeake) turned aside 11 UA shots. Great Dane senior Blaze Riorden, who entered the game as the nation's No. 2-ranked goalkeeper in save percentage, made eight stops for the visitors.
