Baltimore, Md.—UMBC baseball got solid pitching performances, as they swept the Mountaineers by scores of 9-3 and 3-1 on Saturday afternoon. The Retrievers improve to 13-10, winners of their last eight games.
Game One:
UMBC and the Mount both went scoreless early on, but the Retrievers broke through in the third inning, putting up six runs, all with two outs. Jamie Switalski (Gibsonia, Pa./Pine-Richland) got things started with an RBI single, followed up by a Hunter Dolshun (Warwick, N.Y./Warwick Valley) two RBI double off the center field fence. Senior Anthony Gatto (Hauppauge, N.Y./Smithtown West) followed suit, with a single to left to make it 4-0, before he would cross the plate on a stolen base. The inning ended with a Zack Bright (Fairfax Station, Va./WT Woodson) RBI single to give the Retrievers a 6-0 lead.
The Mount would respond the next half inning, scoring on a fielder's choice with the bases loaded. They would again get a pair on a two run home run by Tyler Post, but it was not enough as UMBC scored in the sixth to put the game away, 9-3.
Riley Stephenson (Meridian, Idaho/Boonsboro) picked up his second win of the season, going five innings, striking out four.
Game Two:
UMBC dominated from opening pitch to the final out. UMBC got a solid outing once again from Conrad Wozniak (Cypress, Texas/Cypress Woods/Frank Phillip) who pitched his second straight complete game to earn the win, 3-1.
The Retrievers scored a pair of runs on sac flies, as Switalski popped out to first allowing Kevin Lachance (Clifton, Va./Centreville) to score to give UMBC a 1-0 lead. Switalski would repeat the same play in the fifth, scoring Lachance, this time on a fly out to center.
After a Mountaineer RBI double, Lachance doubled home Connor Hax (Bowie, Md./Bishop McNamara) to add insurance in the sixth, winning 3-1.
Wozniak went seven innings, giving up just three hits while striking out six.
The Retrievers and Mountaineers close out the series tomorrow in Emmitsburg at 1 p.m.
