Orono, Maine—UMBC baseball fell 7-5 to the Black Bears on Sunday, dropping their overall record to 16-16, 6-5 AE. Seniors Kevin Lachance (Clifton, Va./Centreville) and Anthony Gatto (Hauppauge, N.Y./Smithtown West) led the offense with two hits apiece in the loss.

Maine jumped out in front early, scoring off an error in the bottom of the first. The Retrievers however would retake the lead, scoring in the third and fourth innings.

Mitchell Carroll (Oakton, Va./Oakton) led off the inning with a single in the third and would later score off a Gatto single to right field. Gatto drove in another the very next inning after drawing a bases loaded walk, plating freshman AJ Wright (Cherry Hill, N.J./Cherry Hill West).

Lachance would extend the Retriever advantage to 3-1 in the sixth, as he drilled a two out home run down the left field line, his team leading fifth of the year. But the Retriever lead would be short-lived, as the Black Bears took the lead for good in the seventh, scoring five runs on four hits. They added another in the eight to take a 7-3 lead into the ninth.

UMBC fought back, getting a pair of runs in the ninth on a Jamie Switalski (Gibsonia, Pa./Pine-Richland) sacrifice fly and Andrew Casali (New Canaan, Conn./New Canaan) single to make it 7-5, but Maine held on to win by that score, taking the series.

Gatto and Lachance each had two hits, with Gatto driving in a pair of runs and Lachance scoring twice. UMBC starter Cory Callahan (Sykesville, Md./Good Counsel) went six innings, giving up just one run and four hits in a no decision.

The Retrievers return to the diamond on Tuesday, April 19 at Navy, with first pitch starting at 3:30 p.m. from Annapolis.
