UMBC Sweeps UMass Lowell on Saturday

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

Baltimore, Md.—UMBC Baseball got a big day from AJ Wright, as he went 4-6 in the two games on Saturday. UMBC took game one 10-5, before taking the nightcap 1-0 to improve to 9-10, 2-1 AE on the year.

Game One:

UMass Lowell jumped on the Retrievers early, scoring a run in the top half of the first taking an early lead. UMBC responded in their half with four runs, including a big two-run home run from Hunter Dolshun (Warwick, N.Y./Warwick Valley), his third of the year. Freshman AJ Wright (Cherry Hill, N.J./Cherry Hill West) added a two RBI double in the innings to give the Retrievers the lead 4-1.

The trend would continue, as Jamie Switalski (Gibsonia, Pa./Pine-Richland) smacked his second homer of the year to left, making it 6-1, a lead they would not relinquish.

The River Hawks would cut into the deficit, putting up three runs in the fourth, but the Retrievers would tack on another four runs the in the later innings to seal a 10-5 win in game one.

Wright led the Retrievers in game one going 3-4 from the plate, with two RBI and a run scored. Starting pitcher Riley Stephenson (Meridian, Idaho/Boonsboro) went five strong to pick up his first win of the year. Junior Cory Callahan (Sykesville, Md./Good Counsel) pitched four innings of relief to pick up the save.

Game Two:

Game two saw the Retrievers and River Hawks get great performances from their starting pitching. In a game that featured very few hits, it was the Retrievers who broke through in the third inning.

With two outs in the third, Anthony Gatto (Hauppauge, N.Y./Smithtown West) got hit by a pitch to get on base. He would advance to second after a walk by Switalski. Just a batter later, Gatto would score on a beautiful slide around the tag at home after Dolshun laced a single up the middle to give UMBC a 1-0 lead.

That would be all the Retrievers needed, as starter Conrad Wozniak (Cypress, Texas/Cypress Woods) went the distance, giving up just three hits for his second win of the season. The senior walked just three while striking out five in the win.

The two sides will conclude the series tomorrow, March 27 with a 1 p.m. start at Alumni Field.
