Box Score

Video Highlights

Baltimore, Md.—UMBC baseball won their second game in a row, 5-4 in walk-off fashion against the Midshipmen on Wednesday. Senior Anthony Gatto (Hauppauge, N.Y./Smithtown West) would provide the heroics, gathering his fifth hit of the evening to score AJ Wright (Cherry Hill, N.J./Cherry Hill West) taking the 5-4 victory. UMBC improves to 7-10 on the year with the win.

The Mids (15-5-1) broke through first, getting a pair of runs in the third on a two-run double by Sean Trent to give them an early 2-0 lead.

UMBC would respond, cutting the deficit on a Kevin Lachance (Clifton, Va./Centreville) single to left, plating Andrew Casali (New Canaan, Conn./New Canaan). After a Gatto lead-off double in the sixth, sophomore Jamie Switalski (Gibsonia, Pa./Pine-Richland) would step up and deliver a sac fly to tie the game at 2-2.

Navy would have their response the next half inning, taking a 3-2 lead on a passed ball. Wright once again found himself on the base paths, leading off the home half of the seventh with a double. He would advance on a Mitchell Carroll (Oakton, Va./Oakton) sac bunt, and later score on a Lachance ground out.

UMBC would take the lead on a Switalski single in the eighth, allowing Gatto to score, but the Mids would tie the ballgame on an error in the top of the ninth.

The bottom of the inning saw Wright once again with a lead-off hit, this time a single. He moved to third on a Carroll sac bunt and would cross home with the winning run on a Gatto walk-off single up the middle.

Gatto led the way, going 5-5 with a  double and two runs scored. Wirght had three hits and scored twice in the win. Senior Jonny Dierks (Easton, Md./Independence/Fort Scott CC) picked up his third win of the year, going 2.1 innings of relief with three strikeouts.

UMBC concludes their home stand with a three game set against UMass Lowell on Saturday and Sunday March 26-27 at Alumni Field. Saturday will be a double header starting at 3 p.m., and finish with a single game on Sunday at 1 p.m.
