Women's Tennis Drops Decision at No. 48 Virginia Tech

Blacksburg, Va. – The UMBC women's tennis team dropped a 7-0 decision to 48 th-ranked Virginia Tech at the Burrows-Burleson Tennis Center on Sunday, Jan. 31.

UMBC senior Shannon Cleary (Little Bay, NSW, Australia) and freshman Maria Siopacha (Limassol, Cyprus) were the top competitors for the Retrievers against the national power Tech squad. At No. 5 singles, Cleary played a tough first set versus Sansitha Nandakumar, but was edged, 7-5, and dropped the match, 7-5, 6-1.

Siopacha won seven games at the No. 1 singles flight and lost a narrow 6-3, 6-4 decision to Francesca Fusinato.

UMBC gets back into action on Friday, Feb. 5 when they host Delaware at 40 West Racquet Club with a scheduled start time of 7:00 p.m.
