Baltimore, Md.—The Retrievers extended their win streak to nine with a 5-0 win against UMES on Wednesday. UMBC gave up just two hits on the day.
UMBC struck early, getting a trio of runs in the third. Freshman Zack Bright (Fairfax Station, Va./TC Williams) got the scoring started with a sac fly, scoring Andrew Casali (New Canaan, Conn./New Canaan). Kevin Lachance (Clifton, Va./Centreville) singled to left, allowing Mitchell Carroll (Oakton, Va./Oakton) and Connor Hax (Bowie, Md./Bishop McNamara) to score to make it 3-0.
Jake Barnes (Annandale, Va./Annandale) blasted a two-run home run in the fourth extended the lead to 5-0. The home run was his fifth of the year, the most on the team.
UMES put a pair of runners on in the sixth, but a ground out ended the inning. The Hawks got their first hit in the inning, after Kevin Ladner (Roxbury, N.J./Roxbury) threw five innings of no-hit ball. Ladner would end his day with seven innings of scoreless pitching. He gave up just one hit while striking out two.
Mark Esposito (Bethany, Conn./Amity Regional) came on in relief in the final two innings to close the door on the Hawks, as the Retrievers win 5-0 on Wednesday. UMBC pounded out 12 hits on the day, giving up just two hits to the Hawks.
Barnes led the team going 3-4 from the plate. Barnes ripped a double, single and a two-run home run on the day.
UMBC returns to the field this weekend with a key America East set with Albany. The double header on Saturday will begin at noon, with the series finale on Sunday also at noon at Alumni Field.
