Box Score

Video Highlights

Princess Anne, MD – The UMBC Baseball team used a six-run third inning, 18 hits and solid pitching to run past UMES, 8-0, and pick up the most wins for the program since 2002 on a sunny afternoon at Hawk Stadium.

Sophomore center fielder Andrew Casali (New Canaan, Conn./New Canaan), senior second baseman Vince Corbi  (Medford, N.J./Shawnee).and redshirt-junior first baseman Anthony Gatto (Hauppauge, N.Y./Smithtown West) each got three hits on the day, while juniors Kevin Lachance (Clifton, Va./Centreville) and Nick Naumann (Essex, Md./John Carroll/Chestnut Hill) chipped in with two hits of their own.

Junior Kevin Little (Weldon, Calif./Kern Valley/ Taft College) picked up his first win in a Retriever uniform, throwing 5.1/3 shutout innings while striking out four, walking three and allowing three hits.

This improved UMBC's record to 22-16 -- 7-8 in America East -- the most wins the Retrievers have posted since a 32 win season 13 years ago.

Little needed only six pitches to retire UMES (15-28, 13-8 MEAC) in the first. Both teams stranded runners in scoring position in the second before the UMBC bats awoke in the third.

Redshirt freshman Mitchell Carroll (Oakton, Va./Oakton) would lead off the inning with a double to right, and after a Lachance groundout moved him to third, scored on a Corbi single to left. Gatto followed with a single, and sophomore Hunter Dolshun (Warwick, N.Y./Warwick Valley) got hit by a pitch to load the bases for Casali. The sophomore then drove in two with a single to center. The Retrievers would once again load the bases with two outs, and freshman catcher Zack Bright (Fairfax Station, Va./TC Williams) clear them with a three-run double.

UMBC would add two more in the fifth on a Lachance two-out two-run single that scored Naumann and senior Jake Barnes(Annandale, Va./Annandale) for an 8-0 lead. The Hawks would also threaten in the fifth, loading the bases with one out, but Little retired the next two batters.

Senior Kevin Ladner (Roxbury, N.J./Roxbury) came on for Little in the sixth and faced a two-on, one-out jam. That didn't faze the right-hander, who needed only three pitches to escape the jam thanks to a couple of ground balls.

Ladner pitched 2 2/3 innings, allowing two hits without a walk. He helped his own cause in the seventh when he fielded a comebacker to start an inning-ending 1-6-3 double play with the bases loaded.

Junior Denis Mikush (Burke, Va./Robinson) pitched a scoreless ninth inning to complete the Retrievers' fourth shutout this season.

Ten of the 11 Retrievers who had a plate appearance recorded a hit, including all nine in the starting lineup.

UMBC wraps up the road schedule when it returns to action this weekend with a three-game America East series at Binghamton. The Retrievers swept a three-game series from the Bearcats in March at Alumni Field.
