UMBC Defeats George Mason, 6-4; Record Most Wins in a Season Since 2008

Fairfax, Va.—UMBC baseball improved their win streak to three with a 6-4 win against George Mason on Tuesday. The Retrievers recorded 13 hits in the contest to move to 21-16, the most wins in a season since 2008.

The Retrievers jumped on the Patriots early, scoring three runs in the first. Andrew Casali (New Canaan, Conn./New Canaan) smacked a double to left, scoring Vince Corbi (Medford, N.J./Shawnee). Nick Naumann (Essex, Md./John Carroll/Chestnut Hill) followed suit with a two-RBI single, plating Anthony Gatto (Hauppauge, N.Y./Smithtown West) and Casali.

In the very next inning, UMBC got another pair of runs off RBI's from Kevin Lachance (Clifton, Va./Centreville) and Gatto. Lachance singled to score Jake Barnes (Annandale, Va./Annandale), while Gatto singled scoring Brady Zinda (Woodbridge, Va./Hylton).

Gatto would get his third RBI of the game, after a ground out to short scoring Lachance to make it 6-1 after four. George Mason would cut into that lead in their half of the fourth. Brady Acker hit a two-run home run to make it a 6-3 Retriever lead.

The Patriots added another run in the sixth, scoring on an RBI single to cut the UMBC lead to 6-4. However UMBC would shut the door on the Patriots the rest of the way, as Denis Mikush (Burke, Va./Robinson) came on to record his fourth save of the year, giving the Retrievers a 6-4 win.

Naumann led the Retrievers going 3-4 from the plate with two RBI. Gatto knocked in two runs while scoring one himself.

The Retrievers are back in action tomorrow, April 29 at UMES. First pitch with the Hawks is slated for 3:00 p.m.

DAWG BITES:

- The 21 wins are the most in any season since 2008 where they also won 21 games.
