Retrievers Continue Winning Ways, Down Coppin State 9-6

Baltimore, Md.—UMBC baseball won their second game in a row, 9-6 against Coppin State on Wednesday. With the win, UMBC moves to 18-15 on the year and a perfect 11-0 at home.

UMBC (18-15) got a pair of runs in the first two innings, as Andrew Casali (New Canaan, Conn./New Canaan) hit a sac fly in the first to score Kevin Lachance (Clifton, Va./Centreville). Vince Corbi (Medford, N.J./Shawnee) laced a single to plate Lachance in second to give the Retrievers an early 2-0 lead.

Coppin State (3-31-2) would answer in the third, scoring a pair of runs to tie the game. However the Retrievers never wavered, scoring six runs to break the game open at 8-2. Nick Naumann (Essex, Md./John Carroll/Chestnut Hill) would drive in two runs over that span, with Hunter Dolshun (Warwick, N.Y./Warwick Valley), Jamie Switalski (Gibsonia, Pa./Pine Richland) and Zack Bright (Fairfax Station, Va./TC Williams) got the other RBI in the run.

The Eagles kept it close, getting three runs in the fifth to cut it to 8-5, but UMBC responded, getting a run on a Corbi RBI fielder's choice to seal the game. UMBC would win 9-6 to record their most wins in a season since 2013.

Kevin Ladner (Roxbury, N.J./Roxbury) got the win, throwing two innings of relief. Ladner did not give up a run, and gave up on ly three hits. Corbi led the Retriever offense going 3-5 with a pair of RBI.

The Retrievers will be back on the diamond this weekend against Maine. UMBC hosts the three game set, with a double header at noon on Saturday and a single game on Sunday at noon.

DAWG BITES:

The win surpasses the team's total from last year, and is the most since 2013,where they also won 18 games. The team won 21 games in 2008.
