Retrievers Sink Midshipmen, 9-1, on Tuesday

Annapolis, Md.—UMBC baseball picked up a 9-1 mid-week win against Navy on Tuesday. Nick Naumann and Vince Corbi led the way offensively to move to 17-15 on the year. The defense turned four double plays on the day, as Navy left five runners on base.

The Retrievers got this started early, as Nick Naumann (Essex, Md./John Carroll/Chestnut Hill) laced a single to plate Andrew Casali (New Canaan, Conn./New Canaan) in the first. Connor Hax (Bowie, Md./Bishop McNamara) followed up with a single of his own to score Hunter Dolshun (Warwick, N.Y./Warwick Valley) to make it 2-0 Retrievers.

Vince Corbi (Medford, N.J./Shawnee) reached on an error in the second, allowing Mitchell Carroll (Oakton, Va./Oakton) to cross the plate. Jake Barnes (Annandale, Va./Annandale) kept the scoring going with a single of his own in the third to make it 4-0.

The Corbi, Carroll connection hooked up again with Corbi singling home Carroll in the fourth, pushing the lead to 5-0 after four.

Navy finally gets on the board after a pair of UMBC errors, to make it 5-1 in the fifth.

The Retrievers put up a pair of runs in the sixth, following an error by pitcher Andrew Bartek giving UMBC a 7-1 lead. UMBC would not be done, as Corbi grounds out to score Carroll, followed by an RBI ground out by Casali to plate Kevin Lachance (Clifton, Va./Centreville) to push the advantage to 9-1.

The Retrievers would close the door the rest of the way to win 9-1. Naumann and Barnes led the way on offense, going 2-5 and 2-4 respectively. Each scored a run and drove one in.

Shane Vlasic (Ashburn, Va./Broad Run) went five innings to earn the win. Vlasic gave up one hit and one run.

The UMBC baseball team returns to action tomorrow, April 22 with a home contest against Coppin State. First pitch with the Eagles is set for 6:00 p.m. at Alumni Field.
