Barnes, Retrievers Split Saturday Double Dip with UMass Lowell on Saturday

Lowell, Mass.—The UMBC baseball team took game one of the double header in comeback fashion, before falling in game two. The Retrievers move to 16-14, 5-6 AE on the year heading into the series clinching game tomorrow.

Game One:

The River Hawks struck first, getting a run in the fourth inning on a stolen base. Ian Strom crossed the plate on a stolen base to give UML a 1-0 lead. They would tack on another on a in the fifth on an RBI single by Geoff DeGroot.

UMBC would not quit, scoring six unanswered runs in the top of the ninth. Hunter Dolshun (Warwick, N.Y./Warwick Valley) would draw a bases loaded walk to give UMBC their first run. Anthony Gatto (Hauppauge, N.Y./Smithtown West) followed him up with a single to score Connor Hax (Bowie, Md./Bishop McNamara). Senior Vince Corbi (Medford, N.J./Shawnee) hit a sacrifice fly to make it 3-2, before a Jamie Switalski (Gibsonia, Pa./Pine-Richland) single scored Dolshun.

Jake Barnes (Annandale, Va./Annandale) would tack on the final two runs of the inning with a two-run homer to make it 6-2.

Matt Chanin (Olney, Md./Sherwood) and Cory Callahan (Sykesville, Md./Good Counsel) would shut the door in the ninth to give the Retrievers the win. Barnes went 2-4 in game one with a pair of RBI and a run scored.

Game Two:

Neither team could get much going on offense, as both starter pitched gems early. UMBC starter Conrad Wozniak (Cypress, Texas/Cypress Woods/Frank Phillip) gave up just five hits all game and only one run. That one run, however, proved to be the only run either team would get.

The River Hawks broke through in the sixth after a pair of Retriever errors. Matthew Sanchez singled that scored Joe Consolmagno for the only run of the contest.

UML starter Kevin Veilleux went all seven innings giving up five hits and two walks.

The Retrievers and River Hawks will conclude the series tomorrow, Sunday April 19 at noon.
