Aldunate Leads Women's Tennis to 6-1 Victory over Binghamton on 'Senior Day'

BALTIMORE – UMBC senior Isabel Aldunate (Bowie, Md.) celebrated "Senior Day" in style, as she was part of two victories in the Retrievers' 6-1 victory over America East rival Binghamton.

Playing their first match in the month of April, the Retrievers improved to 3-0 versus conference foes at 5-12 overall. Binghamton slipped to 8-9, 1-3.

All three doubles matches were tightly-contested and four of the six singles matches went the distance. Doubles stalwart Shannon Cleary (Little Bay, NSW, Australia) and her partner Mariami Dolashvili (Alushta, Ukraine) edged Shea Brodsky and Alexis Tashiro, 8-6, at the No. 1 flight to get things started, but the Binghamton No. 2 duo evened the doubles with an 8-6 response. But Aldunate, partnered with Madlena Kurasz (Alushta, Ukraine) at the No. 3 slot, prevailed, 8-6, over the Bearcats'  tandem to secure the doubles point.

Retriever sophomore Hanna Victorsson (Hagersten, Sweden) had the quickest singles match, as she routed Brodsky, 6-2, 6-1 at the No. 4 flight. Then, Aldunate pushed UMBC to the brink of taking the match with a 6-3, 7-6 (3) triumph over Tashiro at the No. 3 slot.

Binghamton would stay alive with a three-set victory at the No. 1 flight, the first match of the final four to go the distance. But Cleary come on strong in the final set to prevail, 6-3, 5-7, 6-2, at No. 6 singles to secure the victory for the Retrievers.

Dolashvili and freshman Alice Taylor (Great Gransden, England) won their matches in three sets at Nos. 2 and 5 respectively.

UMBC will play its final home match of the season on Tuesday, April 14 when they host Georgetown in a dual match with the men's team at 1:00 p.m.
