UMBC Comes From Behind to Take 4-3 Victory Over Mount St. Mary's

Box Score

Emmitsburg, Md.—UMBC had to scratch and claw, but found themselves on the right side of a 4-3 win against Mount St. Mary's on Tuesday. UMBC improves to 6-9 on the year.

UMBC kept the Mount off the scoreboard for most of the game, until the Mountaineers broke through in the sixth inning. A leadoff single, followed by a hit by pitch put runners on first and second. They would break through later in the inning off a single to take a 1-0 lead. The very next batter would give them a 2-0 lead on an RBI groundout.

The Retrievers would go hitless through six innings, before Nick Naumann (Essex, Md./John Carroll/Chestnut Hill) would break through the Mount's starter Kevin Myers with a single in the seventh. The Retrievers would end up with three hits in the inning, but fail to capitalize. A pair of runners was thrown out attempting to steal to end the rally.

UMBC fought back, getting singles from Naumann and Andrew Casali (New Canaan, Conn./New Canaan) to start off the ninth. Vince Corbi (Medford, N.J./Shawnee) came through in the clutch, tying the game with a two-out single in the ninth to make it 2-2. Mitchell Carroll (Oakton, Va./Oakton) would give the Retrievers the lead, thanks to an error by the Mountaineers to make it 3-2.

The Mountaineers would respond in their half of the ninth. Tommy Quealy would get the tying RBI ground out to force extra innings.

Kevin Lachance (Clifton, Va./Centreville) got aboard in the tenth, and found himself on third, but the Retrievers failed to bring him home. Tim Kelly (Hampton, Va./York/Virginia Tech) puts UMBC ahead in the eleventh with a double down the left field line, plating Anthony Gatto (Hauppauge, N.Y./Smithtown West).

Naumann and Casali led the offense going 2-5 from the plate. Corbi went 1-4 with a walk, including the game-tying RBI's.

The Retrievers host Navy tomorrow, March 25, at Alumni Field. First pitch with the Midshipmen is set for 6:00 p.m.
