Women's Tennis Splits Sunday Doubleheader; Opens with America East Shutout Over Hartford

BALTIMORE – Fresh off a long journey during spring break, UMBC women's tennis returned to Baltimore and played a pair of matches on Sunday. In the morning, the Retrievers blanked America East foe Hartford, 7-0, before falling to 22nd ranked Ohio State, 6-0, in the evening at UMBC.

Against the Hawks, UMBC took the doubles point by capturing all three matches. Freshmen Alice Taylor (Great Gransden, England) and Charlotte Tonjann (Bussum, The Netherlands) set the tone with a 6-1 victory at the No. 2 flight.

Tonjann kept the momentum going by blanking Hannah Goldman, 6-0, 6-0 at No. 6 doubles. UMBC won all six matches in straight sets and clinched the contest when Madlena Kurasz (Zlotoryja, Poland) outlasted Katie Long, 6-2, 6-1 at the No. 1 flight.

UMBC improved to 2-0 in matches versus America East foes in 2015.

Doubles were not played in the nightcap against the Buckeyes. Taylor got out to a 3-1 lead at No. 4 singles, but fell to Ferny Paz, 6-3, 6-3. Moved up a notch into the No. 5 slot, junior Shannon Cleary (Little South Bay, NSW, Australia) also got out to a first set lead (3-2), but could not hold off Olivia Sneed, 6-3, 6-2.

With the split, UMBC is now 4-10 overall, while OSU improves to 12-4.

"This was a great learning opportunity for the team," said head coach Rob Hubbard. "Ohio State isn't ranked in the top 25 in the nation for nothing."

UMBC returns to action this weekend when they travel to George Washington on March 27.
