UMBC Blanks Towson, 12-0, Behind Strong Showing From Barnes

Box Score

Towson, Md.—The Retrievers shut out the Tigers, 12-0, on Wednesday to move to 4-7 on the year. The bats came alive for the second straight day as UMBC put up 14 hits on Wednesday.

UMBC got on the board early, with Vince Corbi (Medford, N.J./Shawnee) getting on board with a single in the first. Corbi would advance on a wild pitch, and be brought in on a Hunter Dolshun (Warwick, N.Y./Warwick Valley) two out double just a batter later.

Towson would have a chance to respond in the first, as an error by the Retrievers put a runner on second. However the threat would be thwarted as Kevin Lachance (Clifton, Va./Centreville) snagged a line drive and stepped on second for the unassisted double play to end the inning. Just an inning later Towson again had a runner on second, but did not score as freshman Brady Zinda (Woodbridge, Va./Hylton) made a spectacular throw to the plate from left field to get the runner at home.

The Retrievers struck again in the third with Corbi scoring off a Dolshun hit. Corbi made his way to the plate off a Tiger error to give UMBC a 2-0 lead.

Starter Connor Staskey (Virginia Beach, Va./Salem/Temple) found himself in a jam in the third and fourth innings, but each time he got strikeouts to end the inning unscathed.

Hunter Dolshun provided the insurance for UMBC, as his single in the seventh gave UMBC a 4-0 lead. Corbi and Zinda scored on the play, their third and first runs of the game respectively. The Retrievers would not stop there. Jake Barnes (Annandale, Va./Annandale) would hit a double down the left field line to score two more, making the score 6-0 in the seventh.

The Retrievers would get another pair of runs in the eighth to seal the victory. Barnes would put the capper on the game with his two out grand slam to make it 12-0.

Dolshun led the Retrievers on offense, going 2-4 with four RBI's while Barnes had the big home run that drove in four, as he had six total for the game.  Shane Vlasic (Ashburn, Va./Broad Run) gets the win to go to 1-1 on the year.

The Retrievers are back in action with a three game set against the Citadel this weekend. UMBC will head to South Carolina for games from Friday, March 20-Sunday, March 22.
