Elkton, Md. – The UMBC women's tennis won seven of the nine contested matches and defeated host Delaware, 5-2, at the Elkton Indoor Tennis.
The Retrievers snapped a three-game slide and improved to 3-5 on the season, while Delaware fell to 3-2.
Sophomores Mariami Dolashvili (Alushta, Ukraine) and Hanna Victorsson (Hagersten, Sweden) and freshman Alice Taylor (Great Gransden, England) were double-winners for UMBC during the evening match. Dolashvili and partner, senior Shannon Cleary (Little Bay, NSW, Australia) dominated their opponents at No. 1 doubles and came away with a 6-0 victory. Then she produced a convincing 6-2, 6-4 triumph over Danea Jonjic at No. 2 singles, as the Retrievers captured their four singles victories in straight sets.
Taylor and classmate Laura Ambrozic (Portoroz, Slovenia) provided the clinching point in doubles, as UMBC's No. 3 duo broke serve in the final game to defeat Abby Martinez/Amanda Studnicki, 7-5. Then, Taylor dropped only two games at the No. 4 singles flight, besting Kim Milla, 6-0, 6-2.
Victorsson and freshman Chalotte Tonjann (Bussum, The Netherlands) won a hard-fought match at No. 2 doubles, 7-6 (3-0). At No. 6 singles, Victorsson bested Martinez, 6-2, 6-3.
UMBC senior Isabel Alduante (Bowie, Md.) also triumphed, defeating Nataliya Naumova, 7-5, 6-2, at No. 3 singles.
The Retrievers will return to the courts on March 7 when they welcome Old Dominion to 40 West Racquet Club.
