UMBC Game Notes
BALTIMORE – UMBC women's basketball heads to local-rival Loyola on Sunday, Dec. 20 when the Retrievers put their five-game win streak on the line in a battle of the dogs in a noon matchup at Reitz Arena.
Scouting the Retrievers (7-3):
-UMBC extended its win streak to five games, its longest streak since the 2010-11 season, when the Retrievers defeated UMES, 55-52, in overtime on Tuesday. The Retrievers scored the final seven points of overtime behind All-Conference guards Taylor McCarley and Capree Garner. The duo combined to knock down 16-of-18 free throws in the game and totaled 24 points, 11 rebounds, four assists and two steals in the win.
-McCarley, who is coming off her first 20-point effort of the season, moved into seventh all-time at UMBC in free throws made (288) and ninth in free throws attempted (423) versus the Hawks. The junior guard enters the weekend ranked seventh in attempts on the season (75) and 15th in makes (49) in Division I. She also ranks 27th in Division I in assists (53) and is averaging 6.4 assists per game during the Retrievers' current win streak.
-The Retrievers' defense has been highlighted by their ability to force opponents into turnovers. UMBC leads the America East and ranks 15th in the country in turnover margin (+6.70) and 17th in turnovers forced (22.0). The Retrievers also rank in the top-50 of Division I in scoring defense (55.1), three-point field goal defense (.262) and steals (9.9).
-Pandora Wilson leads the Retrievers' three double-digit scorers at 12.1 points per game and is pulling down a team-best 7.8 rebounds per contest. Garner has double-digit points in four of her five games since returning to the lineup for 11.8 points per game, while McCarley is chipping in 11.5 points and 4.2 rebounds per contest. Forwards Chukwuma Chiamaka and Amanda Hagaman have also helped the Retrievers' efforts on the glass, combining for 35 offensive rebounds on the year and a combined 9.6 total rebounds for game.
Scouting the Greyhounds (3-6):
-Loyola has dropped four of its last five contests, including its most recent matchup against No. 5 Maryland on Dec. 8. Senior guard Diana Logan accounted for seven of the Greyhounds' 19 field goals on the night, as she knocked down seven of 14 attempts en route to 19 points.
-Senior guard Colleen Marshall leads three double-digit scorers for the Greyhounds at 15.0 points per game. Sophomore guard Bri Betz-White is chipping in 12.7 points, 4.1 rebounds and 2.3 assists per game, while senior forward Jeneh Perry is leading the squad in rebounding at 7.7 boards per game and is chipping in 10.1 points.
On the Horizon for the Retrievers
-UMBC returns to action for a two-game swing at the Saint Joseph's Tournament, starting with a matchup against the host Hawks at 1 p.m. on Monday, Dec. 28.
Inside the Series
-UMBC has won three of the last five games against Loyola, but the Greyhounds hold a 23-15 lead in the all-time series.
-Loyola has defeated UMBC, 4-1, in the last five games on its home court.
