Omar Finishes Third; Becomes First Retriever to Qualify for NCAA National Championships

Princeton, N.J.—UMBC cross country senior Hassan Omar (Frederick, Md./Thomas Johnson) continues to leave his mark on the program by placing third at the NCAA Mid-Atlantic Regionals on Friday. Omar became the first Retriever to qualify for the NCAA Championships next Saturday.

The Frederick native finished the 10k race with a time of 30:47. He helped lead the Retrievers to a ninth place finish overall.

Classmate Austin Hayslett (Mount Airy, Md./Urbana) was the second Retriever across the finish line, as Hayslett placed 55th with a time of 32:12. Other Retriever scorers were freshman Urgy Eado (Rockville, Md./Wootton/Wesley),  and junios Jon Luckin (Parkton, Md./Hereford) and Patrick Duboyce (New Market, Md./Linganore). Eado finished in 69th place with a time of 32:25. Luckin took home 95th with a time of 32:55, while Duboyce finished 101st in 33:04.

Patrick Tiernan of Villanova won the race, crossing the tape in 30:15. Georgetown took the team title, placing four runners in the top ten.

Omar will race in the national meet on Saturday, Nov. 21 in Louisville, Ky. The meet will be held at Tom Sawyer State Park beginning at 1:00 p.m.
