Cross Country with Strong Showings at Princeton and Gettysburg

Baltimore, Md.—UMBC cross country split up on Saturday, with half the team running at the Princeton Invitational, and the other half at the Gettysburg Invitational. The men finished fifth in Princeton and ninth at Gettysburg, while the women took fifth in New Jersey and seventh at Gettysburg.

Up in New Jersey, Hassan Omar led the way for the men, finishing in fourth place overall with a time of 23:55. The time for Omar set a new school record, as he became the first Retriever to finish under 24 minutes on an 8k course. Jon Luckin and Austin Hayslett finished 31st and 37th respectively with times of 24:44 and 24:55. The other two UMBC scorers were Urgy Eado (57th, 25:11) and Rhys Burgett (73rd, 25:23).

The women were led once again by Sarah Daly who took third place overall, crossing the tape in 21:00. Sophia Cologer turned in a top 20 performance, finishing the race in 13th place in a time of 21:29. Mary Katherine Kulp (53rd, 22:37), Angelina Oputa (62nd, 22:51) and Katie Govatos (66th, 22:54) were the other Retriever scorers.

At Gettysburg, Stephen Alexander and Andrew Kereszetes led the way for the men with 24th and 47th finishes with times of 26:52 and 27:37 respectively. The women had a pair of top 20 finishes, with Olivia Richter and freshman Alexis Bartelloni leading the way. Richter took home 13th place with a time of 23:15, while Bartelloni finished 27th in 23:53.

The men and women will head to Stony Brook for the America East Championships on Saturday, Oct. 31. This year's championship meet will be held on the campus of the Seawolves with the men's race followed by the women's race.
