Corpus Christi, Texas – The UMBC women's tennis team competed at Texas A&M-Corpus Christi in a rare tennis doubleheader at the Thomas J. Henry Tennis Center. The Retrievers fell, 4-1, in the opener, and dropped a down-to-the-wire 5-2 decision in the nightcap.

In the opener during the morning and early afternoon hours, the Retrievers fell, 4-1, to the Islanders. Freshman Hanna Victorsson (Stockholm, Sweden) won both of her matches for the visitors. She combined with classmate Charlotte Tönjann (Bussum, The Netherlands) to triumph, 6-2, at No. 2 doubles. That tied doubles up at 1-all, with another duo of freshmen, Alice Taylor (Great Gransden, England) and Laura Ambrozic (Portoroz, Slovenia) competing in the deciding match. The young Retriever tandem narrow dropped a 7-6 (7-3) decision and the Islanders captured the point.

After UMBC dropped matches at Nos. 1 and 4 singles, Victorsson rallied to get a point for the visitors, defeating Kerry Galhos, 3-6, 6-2, 6-3.  

In the later match, AMCC captured the doubles point, but Victorsson knotted the match at 1-1 with a sound, 6-0, 6-2 victory over Chelsea Horan at the No. 5 position. UMBC fell at Nos. 3 and 2 singles, but stayed alive as junior Shannon Cleary (Little Bay, NSW, Australia) won a long 6-3, 3-6, 6-4 decision over Kerry Galhos at the No. 6 spot.

The final two matches went to a deciding set as UMBC No. 1 Mariami Dolashvili (Alushta, Ukraine) and No. 4 Isabel Aldunate (Bowie, Md.) rallied to capture the second sets of their respective matches. But Dolashvili was edged, 6-1, 4-6, 6-4, to clinch the match for the Islanders and Aldunate succumbed, 6-1, 6-7 (2-7), 6-2.

UMBC (1-2) returns to action on Feb. 1 when they travel to NJIT.
