Edinburg, Texas – The UMBC women's tennis team captured four of the first five points of their opening match and came away with a 4-3 victory at UT-Pan American.
Seven different Retrievers were responsible for the four points and senior Isabel Aldunate (Bowie, Md.) earned the clinching point for the visitors.
UMBC lost the No. 2 doubles match, but rallied with victories from the No. 3 duo of freshmen Laura Ambrozic (Portoroz, Slovenia) and Alice Taylor (Great Gransden, England) and the top tandem of juniors Madlena Kurasz (Zlotoryja, Poland) and Shannon Cleary (Little Bay, NSW, Australia). Ambrozic and Taylor triumphed, 6-2, while the juniors prevailed, 6-4.
Sophomore Mariami Dolashvili (Alushta, Ukraine) gave the Retrievers a 2-0 lead with a 6-1, 6-4 victory over Dominique Esparza at the No. 2 singles slot. After UTPA won at No. 4 singles, freshman Hanna Victorsson (Stockholm, Sweden) put the visitors ahead, 3-1 with a 6-2, 6-3 decision over Natacha Minc at the No. 6 position.
Aldunate, who did not compete in the fall due to injury, wrapped things up for the Retrievers with a solid 6-2, 6-3 win over Christel Amsallem at the No. 5 position.
UMBC has a day off before taking on Texas A&M-Corpus Christi on Saturday.
