Daly Bests Field of 69 as Women's Cross Country Opens at Mount 5K Duals

Emmitsburg – Senior Sarah Daly (Lake Orion, Mich./Lake Orion)) bested a field of 69 runners and won the Mount 5K Duals as the Retrievers opened the cross country season in sunny, pleasant conditions at Mount St. Mary's University.

UMBC bested three of the other four schools competing, recording wins over American (18-43), Maryland (18-40) and Mount St. Mary's (15-49). Navy edged the Retrievers, 27-32.

Daly completed the course in a time of 17:50.98, more than two seconds ahead of the second-place finisher. UMBC sophomore Sophia Cologer (Annapolis, Md./Broadneck) crossed the line in fourth position, posting a mark of 18:12.23. Classmate Kaie Govatos (Annapolis, Md./Annapolis/Florida Southern) competed in her first meet for the Retrievers and placed ninth overall in a time of 18:24.18.

Junior Julie Gessler (Ellicott City, Md./IND) and sophomore Nicole Dawson (Jessup, Md./Hammond) were UMBC's No. 4 and 5 finishers, placing 16th (18:42.90) and 22nd (19:01.28) respectively.

UMBC will see Navy amongst other squads when they travel to Annapolis to compete in the Salty Dog Invitational on Sept. 13.
