Berghaus, Stange-Jonsson Shine in 4-3 Setback at Binghamton

Vestal, N.Y. – The UMBC women's tennis team took a 2-0 lead, but the host Binghamton Bearcats (6-9) won four consecutive singles matches to edge the Retrievers, 4-3, at the Bearcats Sports Complex.

Senior Kim  Berghaus (Offenbach, Germany) stayed hot for UMBC (6-10), triumphing with relative ease in both singles and doubles.  Classmate Josefin Stange-Jonsson (Vasteras, Sweden) also was victorious in a pair of matches during the morning and early afternoon.

Berghaus and sophomore Madlena Kuracz (Zlotoryja, Poland) opened the contest with an 8-2 triumph at No. 2 doubles, while Stange-Jonsson combined with sophomore Shannon Cleary (Little Bay, NSW, Australia) to triumph at No. 1 doubles, 8-2, to clinch the doubles point for the Retrievers.

As singles commenced, Berghaus dropped only two games in a 6-1, 6-1 victory over Alexis Tashiro.  But the hosts prevailed in four tightly-contested matches, clinching the victory when Shea Brodsky edged Isabel Alduante (Bowie, Md.), 6-4, 6-4 at the No. 4 slot.

However, Stange-Jonsson continued to fight for the final point and outlasted Annie DiMuro, 6-7 (4), 6-3, 7-5.

Berghaus and Stange-Jonsson will play in their final match at the Retriever Tennis Complex on Sunday when UMBC hosts Coppin State.
