Box Score UMBC at GW, 9-22-12
The UMBC men's soccer team will make the short trek to
Washington, D.C. and take on the George Washington Colonials at GW
Soccer Field on Sat., Sept. 22 for a 3:00 p.m. match. The
Retrievers (3-2-2) are coming off a convincing 2-0 win vs. Loyola
(Md.) on Sept. 19, while GW (3-3-0) has been off for a week since a
2-1 loss at Bryant.

III scored goals in a six-minute span early in the second half
and junior goalkeeper Phil
Saunders preserved the shutout by stopping a penalty kick
with seven minutes remaining as the host Retrievers blanked Loyola,
2-0, before 1,319 fans at Retriever Soccer Park.
MAJOR AWARD WINNER: Liam Paddock from the University
of Maryland Baltimore County has been named the 2012 Eastern
College Athletic Conference Division I Scholar-Athlete of the
Year. Paddock will be feted at the 2012 ECAC Honors dinner
held in conjunction with the 24th Annual ECAC Convention and Trade
Show that will be held September 29-October 2 at the Mystic
Marriott Hotel & Spa in Groton, Conn. The Honors Dinner
is slated for Sunday evening, September 30.
Paddock celebrated his return to the field with the game-winning
goal in the 1-0 victory at Mount St. Mary's on Sept. 7. He had
missed the first three games with a lower body injury. The goal,
which occurred in the 8th minute, was the third of
Paddock's career and his first since 2010.
Paddock is also one of 30 men's soccer nominees for the Senior
Class Award. An acronym for elebrating Loyalty and
Achievement for Staying in School ®, the
Senior CLASS Award focuses on the total student-athlete and
encourages students to use their platform in athletics to make a
positive impact as leaders in their communities.
MILESTONES: Dacres scored his first collegiate goal in the
Retrievers' 3-1 loss at No. 3 Maryland… Back Spencer
Williams picked up his first career point with an
assist vs. Loyola on Sept. 19.
SHOW STOPPER: Redshirt JR GK Phil
Saunders flourished as a freshman in 2009, starting
all 20 games and posting six shutouts as UMBC raced off to a 9-0
start and national ranking. Saunders recorded his eighth
career shutout in the 0-0 overtime draw with Radford and then came
up with a career-high eight saves in the 1-1 tie vs. VCU.
Saunders now has a career record of 20-11-2. He posted his third
shutout of the season and tenth career blanking vs. Loyola.
Saunders faced his first penalty shot in 34 games as a collegian
and thrwarted Loyola's Connor Thompson in the 83' on Sept.
19.
MORE KAPOR: Kapor had an assist on the first
five UMBC's goals this year, scored No. 6 on a penalty
kick at George Mason and added assists on UMBC goals Nos. 7 and 8
of the campaign in the 2-0 win over Loyola. He is UMBC's active
leader with 17 career helpers and needs one more assist to move
into a tie for tenth place on UMBC's allt-time list. Entering the
week, he led America East with 0.83 assists per game and was second
in the nation in that category.. Three of UMBC's eight goals in
2012 have come via Kapor-initiated corner kicks (RMU, Mount St.
Mary's, Maryland).
NOTES: UMBC was ranked 25th in the nation in home attendance in
2011 with 911 fans per game and are averaging 995
through the first four games of the 2012 campaign… The
lightning delay held the Sept. 1 attendance down to 525…
UMBC is 27-3-12 (.786) in September home games since the 2003
season.
If the 3-2-2 record looks familiar, it is because that is where
UMBC was through seven games last year. UMBC was
undefeated through the first four games of the season- a feat they
had accomplished seven times since 1999.
INSIDE THE SERIES: UMBC and George Washington have not met since
the 2004 season when the Retrievers posted a 3-0 victory at home.
UMBC leads the overall record at 6-4-3 and they have been
victorious in the last three meetings. The last meeting in
Washington, D.C. occurred in 2003 when the Retrievers prevailed,
3-2, in overtime.
A GLANCE AT THE COLONIALS: George Washington currently holds a
3-3-0 record while having two out of three victories being at
neutral sites. The Colonials recently played back-to-back games in
The Jay Sculley Memorial Tournament in Lexington, VA, where they
finished 1-1, falling 3-1 to host VMI before bouncing back with a
2-0 win over Liberty. Their latest trip to Bryant resulted in a 2-1
loss up in Providence, RI. JR F Tyler Ranalli leads the Colonials
with three goals.
UP NEXT: UMBC will take on La Salle for their fifth consecutive
year. The 7:00 game will be hosted on Tues., Sept. 25 at Retriever
Soccer Park.
