Gill Throws Seven Innings, Limits Mount to One Run to Propel Baseball to 3-1 Win

Box Score

EMMITSBURG, Md. – UMBC junior Mac Gill (Bethesda, Md./Walter Johnson) went seven innings, giving up just one earned run as the UMBC baseball team picked up its first win of the season, defeating Mount St. Mary's 3-1, Saturday afternoon at Straw Family Stadium.

UMBC (1-4) scored single runs in the third, fourth, and eighth innings and never trailed in defeating the Mountaineers (3-8) for the fourth consecutive time.

Gill (1-1) picked up the win for the Retrievers while Scott Nickerson(0-2) took the loss after surrendering two of the UMBC runs.

Sophomore Vince Corbi (Medford, N.J./Shawnee) and senior Rob McCabe (Philadelphia, Pa./St. Joseph's Prep) each picked up two hits to pace the Retriever offense with McCabe scoring the first run of the game.  Freshman Kevin Lachance (Clifton, Va./Centreville) singled in sophomore Anthony Gatto (Hauppauge, N.Y./Smithtown West) in the fourth for what proved to be the game-winning run.

Centerfielder Tom Healey went 3-for-4 and scored Mount's only run to lead the hosts.

After a scoreless first two innings, UMBC finally made a mark on the game with McCabe leading off the third inning with a double to left-center.  After a groundout and a walk to Corbi, senior Tom Gilchrist (Olney, Md./Sherwood/Chesapeake CC) brought his classmate into score with a single to center.  The Retrievers could not get any more though, following a line out and Corbi getting caught trying to steal third.

Gill got a shutdown inning in the bottom half and his lineup gave him more support in the fourth as Gatto walked to start the inning, advanced to second on a wild pitch, and then came home on Lachance's opposite field base knock.

Mount St. Mary's cut the lead in half, however, in the bottom half of the frame as Brandon Scott scored on a single down the left field line by Nick Walker.

Gill settled down thereafter, allowing only two more hits over the course of the next three innings.

Mount's bullpen did their part as well, keeping the Retrievers off of the board until the top of the eighth.  Sophomore Jake Barnes (Annandale, Va./Annandale) reached on an error to start the inning and moved to second on a single by Corbi.  Gilchrist then moved both runners over with a sac bunt, and following a pitching change, freshman Manny Colon (Williamstown, N.J./Buena Regional) pulled a single to right to bring in Barnes.

That was all UMBC needed as freshman Mike Gomez (Nutley, N.J./Don Bosco Prep) entered in the bottom of the eighth and pitched two scoreless innings to earn his first career save.

UMBC and Mount St. Mary's take the field tomorrow, this time in Baltimore at Alumni Field, in a rematch.  First pitch between the Retrievers and Mountaineers is scheduled for 1:00 p.m.

DAWG BITES

-          With the win, UMBC improves to 63-22-1 all-time against the Mount.  The Retrievers have faced the Mountaineers more than any other school in program history.

-          Gill's final line: 7 IP, 7 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 1 BB, 2 SO

-          Corbi's multi-hit game is his first of the year and eighth of his career.  He also went 2-for-4 against Mount St. Mary's on Apr. 25, 2012.

-          McCabe's multi-hit game is his first since going 4-for-5 against the Mount in that same Apr. 25 game
