BETHLEHEM, Pa. – UMBC sophomore Redatu Semeon (Waldorf,
Md./Thomas Stone) ran a career-best 8k time of 25:02 to lead the
UMBC men's cross country team to a 13th-place finish in the Gold
Division at the Paul Short Run, Saturday morning at Lehigh
University's Goodman Course.
For the women, senior Cody Mezebish (Westminster, Md./South
Carroll) led UMBC to a fifth-place finish in the Brown
Division.
Indiana won the overall team competition in the men's Gold
Division led by JR Ricker's tenth-place finish while James Leakos
from Harvard took top individual honors with a time of 23:13.
With his 66th-place finish, Semeon led the Retrievers across the
line for the first time in his career, while his time ties him with
teammate Eric Schuler (Columbia, Md./Reservoir) for the
tenth-fastest 8k time in school history.
Sophomore Hassan Omar (Frederick, Md./Thomas Johnson) was the
second Retriever across the line, placing 78th with a time of
25:09, while senior Jake Albino (Hampton, N.Y./Minisink Valley)
scored for the third time this season, finishing in 25:22 in 95th
place. Schuler, meanwhile, also scored for the third time in
three meets, completing the 8k course in 25:27 for 106th
place. Sophomore Austin Hayslett (Mt. Airy, Md./Urbana)
rounded out the UMBC scoring team by placing 131st with a time of
25:39.
In the women's race, Mezebish paced the Retrievers for the first
time this season by finishing 19th with a 6k time of 22:21.
Sophomore Nicole Dawson (Jessup, Md./Hammond), who led the Black
and Gold in each of the first two meets, completed the course less
than 20 seconds (22:39) after Mezebish.
Junior Julie Gessler (Ellicott City, Md./Institute of Notre
Dame) and sophomore Angel Bucci (Upper Darby, Pa./Upper Darby)
finished the course only one second apart (23:17; 23:18) to finish
in 67th and 68th, respectively. Senior Kirsten McGovern
(Sykesville, Md./Century) completed the scoring squad by finishing
in 121st with a time of 23:55.
The Retrievers return to competition in two weeks when they
travel to New Jersey for the Princeton Invitation on Oct. 19.
