Boston, Mass.- Despite a torrid shooting display by visiting
UMBC, the Boston University Terriers outscored the Retrievers,
81-75 at Case Gymnasium.
The Retrievers hit season highs in both field goal percentage
(31-of-59, 52.5%) and 3-point field goals (12), but the Terriers
converted on 19-of-31 shots from the floor in the second half to
outlast UMBC.
UMBC junior forward Chase
Plummer (Plainfield, N.J./St. Patrick) posted a
double-double, scoring 16 of his 19 points in the second half and
adding a game-high 11 rebounds. Senior guard Ryan
Cook (Laurel, Md./Pallotti) added 15 points and six
rebounds.
Six Terriers scored in double figures, including junior forward
Dom Morris, who tallied 19 points. Boston U. (5-3 AE, 11-10) has
won five of its last six contests. UMBC slipped to 2-5 in league
play and 4-16 overall.
The Retrievers hit eight consecutive field goal attempts in the
second half and built a 55-50 advantage on a mid-range
jumper by Cook at the 10:21 mark of the stanza. After an
exchange of baskets, the Terriers made the critical run of the
game, outscoring UMBC, 12-2, over the next five minutes to take a
64-59 lead with 5:21 remaining.
Senior forward Adrian Satchell (Windsor,
Conn./Windsor), who tied his season high with 11 points, scored
inside on back-to-back possessions to slice the deficit to 64-63
with 3:59 remaining. But Terrier freshman guard Maurice Watson, Jr.
hit a trey on the next trip down the floor, sparking a 7-0 run over
the next 84 seconds and UMBC could not get inside a four-point
deficit the rest of the way.
Senior guard Brian Neller (Red Bank, N.J./Christian
Bros. Acad.) was the fourth Retriever in double figures with 12
points, as he converted 4-of-9 shots from behind the arc. Plummer
was 3-of-5 from three-point range, while Cook connected on all
three of his attempts from long distance.
Overall, the Retrievers hit 12-of-22 shots from behind the arc,
but were outscored, 46-26 in the paint. UMBC posts Brett
Roseboro and Will Wise were suspended for the
game and did not accompany the team to Boston.
The Retrievers got off a solid start and took a 15-6 lead when
freshman forward Malik
Garner (Philadelphia, Pa./Chestnut Hill Acad.) and Neller
hit back to back treys to give UMBC a 15-6 lead at 12:11 mark. UMBC
increased the advantage to 25-15 with seven minutes remaining in
the half on Cook's second consecutive trey, but the Terriers went
on a 10-0 run over a four-minute span to knot the score at
25-all.
Neller hit his second and third trifectas of the half to give
the visitors a 32-31 halftime edge. UMBC hit 7-of-13 shots from
behind the arc in the first 20 minutes, while the Terriers were
0-for-9. But the hosts dominated the paint, outscoring the
Retrievers, 18-6, on the interior.
The Retrievers set a school record in the contest, by attempting
only two free throws in the game. The Terriers outscored UMBC,
15-1, from the charity stripe. The 81 points allowed by UMBC is its
most since allowing 83 points to Canisius on Nov. 29.
UMBC returns to action on Wed., Jan. 30 when they take on
Binghamton in Vestal, N.Y.
