BALTIMORE- UMBC senior forward Rachel McKee (Ellicott
City, Md./Mount Hebron) scored on a first half penalty kick, but
the Maine Black Bears scored with one second remaining in the first
half and the two America East squads battled to a 1-1 double-
overtime draw in pleasant conditions at Retriever Soccer Park.
UMBC (1-8-3, 0-2-1 America East) earned its first league point
of the campaign, while Maine is now 5-4-2 overall and 1-1-1 in
conference play.
The game was UMBC's first at home since Sept. 9.
"I think we did things this game that we haven't done in other
games, we had a number of corner kicks, put pressure on
their keeper, and had chances that we haven't seen in some of our
prior games," said head coach Leslie
Wray. "We are proud of that."
The Retrievers struck first in the 27th minute
as the Black Bears were called for a hand-ball in the box. Although
Maine freshman goalkeeper Lauren Swant dove to her left, McKee's
shot was perfectly placed into the right corner of the cage.
The goal was McKee's second of the season and the
11th of her career.
The visitors evened the game just behind the halftime horn. UMBC
attempted to clear the ball from the midfield area, but Maine
reserve forward Eve L'Abbe picked it off and booted the ball ahead
to classmate Charlene Achille. Achille held off a UMBC defender,
avoided onrushing UMBC junior netminder Lauren
Kadet (Oakville, Ontario/Sir Wilfrid Laurier) and poked the
ball into an unguarded net from 14 yards out.
Maine applied early pressure in the second half, but the hosts
had the better of the play in the final 25 minutes and overtime
frames. UMBC had 10 corners to Maine's 3, including six of the
seven awarded in the final 65 minutes and put in some dangerous
crosses that Swant had to capture.
Maine outshot UMBC, 18-15. Kadet made seven saves, while Swant
replied with four.
The Retrievers return home on Oct. 4 when they host America East
foe Boston University for a 7:00 p.m. tilt.
