Washington, D.C,- UMBC erased an early 1-0 deficit, scored twice
in a five-minute span, and finished strong to defeat host George
Washington, 2-1, at GW Soccer Field.
The Retrievers improved to 4-2-2 on the campaign, while GW
slipped to 3-4-0.
"The last three games were very emotional games and it could
have been a letdown today, but to our credit we came out and got
the job done and got a much-needed win on the road," head coach Pete Caringi
said.
Senior midfielder Milo Kapor (Toronto, Ont./Emily
Carr) and sophomore midfielder Jordan
Becker (Pocomoke, Md./Pocomoke) scored in the
15th and 19th minutes
respectively after the Colonials got on the board in the
ninth minute.
Kapor now has two goals and eight assists on the season,
contributing on all 10 of the Retrievers' goals through eight
games.
The hosts struck first as forward Seth Rudolph redirected a
cross from seven yards out just 8:29 into the match.
But UMBC, which dominated the action in the first half, tied the
game less than six minutes later. Junior forward Pete
Caringi III (Perry Hall, Md./Calvert Hall) was taken down in
the box by GW netminder J.P. Van der Merwe. Kapor drilled his
second successful penalty kick of the season 14:25 into the
contest.
At the 18:44 mark, UMBC had a free kick just outside the left
edge of the box. Caringi touched the ball to Kapor, who blasted it
on goal. Van der Merwe made the save, but Becker pounced on the
rebound and buried it from five yards away.
The Retrievers continued to press the attack in the second half,
allowing only one Colonial shot, while taking seven. But
the one shot nearly tied the game, as Retriever junior
netminder Phil
Saunders (Perry Hall, Md./Perry Hall) made a leaping save
on a header bound for the top corner of the goal
with just more than six minutes remaining.
UMBC outshot GW, 18-7, and Saunders earned the win with five
saves. Van der Merwe was forced to make 11 saves in the Colonial
net.
The Retrievers return home to play another Atlantic 10
school, La Salle on Tuesday, Sept. 25.
Notes: Kapor moved into a tie for tenth place on UMBC's all-time
assist list with 18… The Retrievers extended their winning
streak to four straight over GW and now have a 7-4-3 lead in the
all-time series lead.
