MECHANICSVILLE, Va. – UMBC cross
country junior Brandan
McGee (Hiram, Ohio/Crestwood) finished fourth in the men's
race and sophomore Sarah
Daly finished 16th in the women's race, to
lead the Retrievers Saturday morning at the season-opening Spider
Alumni Open at Pole Green Park. The men's squad finished
second, behind only host Richmond, with 50 points while the women
placed third.
Continuing his leadership from last year when he led UMBC across
the line five times, McGee was the top Retriever finisher on
Saturday, completing the 5K course in personal-best and school
record time of 15:17.2. A large UMBC contingent was not
far behind as five Retrievers finished 13th through 17th led by
junior Jake
Albino (Hampton, N.Y./Minisink Valley) who finished in
15:31.8. Senior captain TJ
Cowing (Severna Park, Md./Severna Park) was just behind
his teammate with a time of 15:32.2.
For the women, sophomore Sarah
Daly (Lake Orion, Mich./Lake Orion), competing in her
first race for the Retrievers, crossed the line first for the Black
and Gold with a two-mile time of 11:16.6. Freshman Angel
Bucci (Upper Darby, Pa./Upper Darby) was just off of
Daly's pace, finishing less than a second behind at 11:17.1 to take
17th place.
The Retrievers now have the week off from competition before
heading down to the US Naval Academy for the Navy
Invitational/Salty Dog Invitational on Saturday, Sept. 15 beginning
at 11 a.m.
