Baseball Concludes Road Stretch with 7-1 Loss at Georgetown

BETHESDA, Md. – UMBC senior Curtis Schickner (East Windsor, N.J./Lawrenceville Prep) went 2-for-3 and scored a run but the UMBC baseball team ended its road swing with a 7-1 loss to Georgetown, Tuesday afternoon at Shirley Povich Field.

Starter Mac Gill (Bethesda, Md./Walter Johnson) threw three innings of shutout ball, but earned a no decision when he left the game with the score tied at zero. 

Freshman Gavin Gibbons (Vienna, Va./James Madison HS) entered for the fourth inning and did not give up an earned run, but was charged with the loss due to three unearned runs.

Georgetown middle reliever Max Allen earned the win after throwing two innings of scoreless ball while yielding only one hit and issuing one walk.

After a scoreless three innings, Georgetown made the breakthrough in the bottom of the fourth on an RBI double by Andy Lentz.  The Hoyas built an insurmountable over the next three innings, scoring six runs to push the lead to 7-0.

Trevor Matern paced the Georgetown offense, collecting three singles in five trips to the plate on Tuesday while also scoring two runs.

The Retrievers got on the board in the top of the eighth inning as Schickner led off with a single.  He moved around to third on back-to-back singles by seniors Max Himmelstein (Moorestown, N.J./Moorestown) andBrian Klukowicz (Clifton, N.J./St. Peter's Prep), and came home on a double play ball.

UMBC now returns home for a four-game series with Maine to begin America East play this weekend.  The Retrievers and Black Bears will play doubleheaders on consecutive days with Friday's twin bill set to begin at 1 p.m.

DAWG BITES

-          After playing 13 of its last 15 games on the road, UMBC returns home to play 13 of its next 18 games at the Baseball Factory Field at UMBC.

-          Since going hitless in the series opener against Longwood on Saturday, Klukowicz has recorded a hit in each of the last three games.  He has now picked up a hit in 13 of the 14 games he has played in this year.

-          Georgetown has won all three meetings between the two schools this season.  The Hoyas took the first two game played earlier this season in Winston Salem, N.C. before winning Tuesday's contest.
