Box Score BALTIMORE, Md. – The UMBC baseball team hit multiple homeruns for the second time this season, but could not keep up as Buffalo downed the Retrievers, 16-8, Wednesday evening at the Baseball Factory Field at UMBC.
Junior Tom Gilchrist (Olney, Md./Sherwood/Chesapeake CC) led UMBC (2-10) against Buffalo, going 3-for-5, with a homerun, two runs and two RBIs. Brian Klukowicz (Clifton, N.J./St. Peter's Prep) also hit a long ball for the Retrievers in the loss.
Making his first ever start for UMBC, sophomore Mac Gill (Bethesda, Md./Walter Johnson) took the loss after giving up five runs, three earned, on five hits through 3.2 innings. Gill (0-1) recorded four strikeouts while walking two batters.
Buffalo's Michael Burke gave up five runs through six innings of work, but still picked up his second win of the season.
The Retrievers started the game brightly with Klukowicz launching his first homerun of the season to straight away centerfield to give the hosts a quick 2-0 lead in the first inning.
Buffalo responded just two innings later, plating three runs to take the lead, 3-2. The Bulls then scored 13 runs in the next three innings to build an insurmountable lead.
Buffalo's first three batters, Matt Pollock, Jason Kanzler and Tom Murphy combined to go 8-for-15 on Wednesday, driving in 10 runs and scoring seven more.
The Retrievers cut into the lead, scoring three times in the bottom of the sixth, capped by a two-RBI double by freshman Vince Corbi (Medford, N.J./Shawnee) down the right field line.
After plating one in the eighth, UMBC made one last push in the last of the ninth as freshmanAnthony Gatto (Hauppauge, N.Y./Smithtown West) doubled off the left field wall to drive in juniorsMike Schmidt (Glen Burnie, Md./North County/Catonsville CC) and Jason Allinder (Snow Hill, Md./Snow Hill/Chesapeake CC).
The Retrievers now hit the road and will play their next 12 games away from the friendly confines of the Baseball Factory Field at UMBC. The Black and Gold return to the field on Friday to start a three-game weekend series with local rival Coppin State at Joe Cannon Stadium. Friday's first pitch is scheduled for 5 p.m.

- Tonight's game between UMBC and Buffalo was the first time that the two teams have met in exactly five years. The Retrievers defeated the Bulls, 6-2, on Mar. 14, 2007.
- With two homeruns tonight, the Retrievers have now hit seven homeruns in 12 games this season. In 2011, UMBC hits seven homeruns in 47 games.
- UMBC's eight runs are the most runs they have scored in a loss this season.
