BALTIMORE- Local products Dave Vaeth (Dundalk,
Md./Patapsco) and Joseph
Glos (Perry Hall, Md./Perry Hall) each scored their first
collegiate goals in the first half and host UMBC (5-3-3) went on to
defeat Howard (0-11), 3-1, in a non-conference contest played on
the turf at UMBC Stadium.
Junior Kadeem
Dacres (Rosedale, N.Y./Mercer County CC) added an
insurance goal for the Retrievers.
Vaeth scored what is believed to be the fastest goal by a UMBC
Division I player to begin a game. The senior holding midfielder
captured a loose ball 30 yards from the goal, took one touch and
banged a 25-yard strike into the upper right corner of the goal.
The goal was recorded just 17 seconds into the contest as Vaeth
competed in his 66th career game.
After missing a good opportunity from deep right wing moments
earlier, Glos, a sophomore, got another chance when sophomore
back Oumar
Ballo (Baltimore, Md./Archbishop Curley) played the ball
back down the same wing. This time, Glos shot with his left foot
and beat Howard netminder Eric Hamilton from seven yards out inside
the far post.
Howard cut the deficit to 2-1 in the
37th minute, when Talmon Smith finished a
two-on-one break after receiving a chipped crossing pass from
Phillip Coker.
But UMBC came outs strong in the second frame and quickly retook
a two-goal margin. Sophomore midfielder Stephen
Ho (North Potomac, Md./Wootton) raced down the right side
and his cross found senior midfielder Milo
Kapor (Toronto, Ont./Emily Carr) in the center of the box.
Kapor wheeled and spotted an open Dacres on the left side and the
Retriever forward skimmed his shot past Hamilton from 10 yards
away.
Kapor, who entered the week second in the nation with 0.8
assists per game, recorded his ninth assist of the season. He is
now tied for ninth place with Matt Gormley ('00) on
UMBC's all-time list.
UMBC outshot the Bison, 17-5, and forced Hamilton to come up
with seven stops. UMBC junior goalkeeper Phil
Saunders (Perry Hall, Md./Perry Hall) did not record a
save for the hosts.
UMBC improved to 11-2-2 in 15 all-time meetings with
Howard.
The Retrievers return to America East Conference action on Sat.,
Oct. 6 when they face UNH Wildcats in Durham, N.H.
