BALTIMORE- Six Vermont players scored in double figures, as the
visiting Catamounts defeated UMBC, 90-62, in an America East
Conference contest.
The Catamounts won for the sixth time in their last seven
outings and improved to 6-2 in America East play and 12-10 overall.
UMBC dropped to 2-5, 3-16.
UMBC sophomore forward Chase Plummer
(Plainfield, N.J.) scored a game-high 20 points and added a
game-best nine rebounds and was the Retrievers' America East Player
of the Game.
Vermont sophomore wing Brian Voelkel scored just four points,
but had 10 assists and seven rebounds and was the Catamounts'
Player of the Game. Freshman guard Four McGlynn came off the bench
to lead UVM with 15 points.
With the game tied at 12-all six minutes into the contest, the
Catamounts went on a 16-0 run over the next seven minutes to take
control of the game. They led, 39-23, at the half.
After falling behind 47-28 early in the second, the Retrievers
mounted a 13-4 surge, capped by a Plummer layup with 12:16
remaining. But a subsequent 8-0 response by Vermont, started by
back-to-back three-point plays, put the game out of reach for the
hosts.
Vermont outrebounded, UMBC, 41-23, and scored 20 second-chance
points. They hit 33 of 58 attempts (56.9 percent), 16 of 19
(84.2 percent) from the free throw line and recorded 25 assists on
33 field goals.
UMBC junior guard Brian Neller was
the only other Retriever in double figures with 13 points.
The Retrievers head to Boston tomorrow for a Tuesday clash with
the Terriers- the team's fourth game in seven days.
