Baltimore—Host Loyola (5-1-1) scored a pair of second half
goals and went on to defeat UMBC (2-2-2), 2-0, in rainy conditions
at Ridley Athletic Complex.
UMBC controlled the tempo and territory of the first half and
outshot the hosts, 6-1, in the first 45 minutes. Senior forward Andrew Bulls
(Millersville, Md./Old Mill) had the best scoring opportunity,
drilling a 32-yard direct kick into the chest of Loyola goalkeeper
Kyle Wittman.
The Retrievers outshot Loyola, 8-2, over the first 55 minutes,
but the game turned in the 60thminute when Loyola had
three straight corner kicks. The hosts would hit the post on a long
50-yard direct kick in the 68th minute, and finally
cashed in when sophomore midfielder Diego McQuestion scored on left
footed blast from 21 yards out in 71st minute.
Just four minutes later, the Greyhounds doubled the advantage
when a ball sent into the box and Loyola senior midfielder Wade
McHugh chipped it past a charging UMBC netminder Dan Louisignau
(Wilmington, Del.) and into the net.
The Greyhounds had the final five shots of the game and Whiteman
posted his fourth shutout of the season.
Louisignau was credited with one save in the contest, UMBC's
first road game of the campaign.
The Retrievers return to action on Saturday, when they travel to
Farmville, Va. to take on Longwood.
